i jsut got 340 on 17.2 gallons. That was 95% highway though. I havent had my fuel system cleaned, but i did clean my throttle body two weeks ago. I also figure ill change my fuel filter. Anyone noticed better results with the 300zx filter?

400+ (Hwy) after I changed my front O2 sensors. Very consistently too.

250-300 (City/Hwy) and 330-360 (Hwy) before.

I'll have to check what my MPG really is.
Feels like it's been getting worse...
but I don't drive for maximum MPG
I drive for maximum GPM (grins per mile)

I'm trying to figure out how some of you guys are claiming 400, 450 or even 500+ on a tank. Is this all highway and granny driving?! I'm not trying to be wise, hust can't imagine how you all are doing this. I haven't done a true highway run yet, but I'm now really curious to see how many miles I'd get on a tank. I am basically all city type driving and sometimes have a littel heavy foot. With this I get 270-280 with a 1/4 tank left. I've been seeing about 18-20 mpg this way, which I figure isn't too far off-base. I know not to run my tank until E because of the stress it puts on the fuel pump. Some of the figures you guys are throwing out astound me!

Don't listen to them Doc, the people who say 400+ are flat out liars!

LIARS! LIARS! LIARS!!!!

They are so full of **** it's not even funny anymore. They think that lying about gas mileage will make them cool or something. I don't see how a stock Maxima could ever get anything over 350, assuming normal driving, be it highway or not. END OF STORY

NOW STOP LYING!

Boss,
I've been thinking the exact same thing, but you made it clear without hesitation. I've been trying to figure out how an 18 gallon tank at even 27mog would get anyone 400, 450 or 500 miles. The math doesn't add up. Probably most guys who claim these figures are just screwing with those who seriously posted this in the first place. Seems like many times when someone posts a poll or asks a serious question they get played with or insulted. I wish more people were more serious about discussions. Most times I find a lot of serious talk and good info, but sometimes people just play. I don't mind the play part because I have a sense of humor, I just really dislike those who insult others. No need to flame on anyone, we all have a common interest. Thanks, Boss, for setting the record straight.

my last fill up i actually had around 380 something miles and when i filled up, it was 15.6 gallons (the needle was just about the E mark, but no light yet). it seemed like pretty good mpg to me but that actually only comes out to about 24some mpg. oh yea and it was mostly highway driving also

That's a really tall accusation. Sure there might be some guys who are BSing, but like you said, that would hardly make them cool. However, if you'd sit back and think about it a little, you'd realize that it is very possible.

Think about all the variables:
How fast do you drive? How hard do you accelerate? Do you use cruise control? How worn are your tires? Are they inflated to the proper pressure? Are they aligned properly? How wide are they? What is their aspect ratio? Does your state mandate oxygenated gasoline? Do you use 93+ octane fuel? How new is your knock sensor? Do you have a manual or automatic transmission? How old are your spark plugs? When did you last change your air filter? How are your oxygen sensors? Is the terrain where you drive hilly or flat? ....the list goes on and on and on, and it doesn't even begin to address the affects of MODS.

For those of us who don't drive like a$$holes, who maintain our cars impeccably, and use cruise control, it's a reality. My record in my Max is 305 miles on 8.9 gallons of gas, or 34.2 miles per gallon. That's at a nearly constant 74mph on I-80 across most of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, in very light traffic. There are many other times when I've hit more than 30mpg on the highway. Of course, that's not all the time though...I usually get around 23-26mpg around town. And I'm far from being a grandmother.

You don't want to believe me? You're entitled to your opinion. I'm entitled to drive in reality. I won't call someone a liar merely because I don't understand something.

ummmm, notice how I specifically stated "assuming normal driving", which means driving in a way that majority of people would consider normal! That includes driving on a highway with properly inflated tires, good sparks plugs, etc. etc. good driving habits etc. etc. , even driving on the recommended 91-94 octane fuel - just overall a car in good condition and someone with good, or normal, driving habits. Now let's see, a car with unproper tire inflation wouldn't be consider normal for driving now WOULD IT???!!!!!!!

Also, don't believe in wonders. Yes, manual has always been known to put more miles on a tank of gas, but that's give or take no more than 40 miles on a Maxima, also depending on city or highway driving.

Finally, WTF?! Come on all you smart-a$$es out there, enough of this BS talk - people who say 400+ miles annoy me and should be ripped on cause we all know they're lying.

...watch, give it a couple more weeks and we'll have a noob decide to let everyone know he did 500+ miles on a tank of gas in his stock 4th gen SE only to be "recognized" and made "famous" by ignorant people who will actually believe him/her. 500 miles? haha...yeah, maybe on a dyno. LOL

lol, next time i make a 400 mile road trip, i'll be sure to video tape it just so you KNOW that a stock max can go 400+ on one tank of gas. And as i said in my previous post, over the summer when i did my 400+ trips, i had a bad KS and all 3 o2 sensors were dead. (ECU gave codes for all). I did the trips every other weekend from Hampton, VA to Balitmore, MD to see my GF. The trip was around 245miles one way and we always went out while I was there so there was some city driving mixed in there as well. Can't forget to add that I had about 100lbs of stereo in the trunk every trip too.

I will admit that my fuel light would come on anywhere between ~385 and ~410 on my return trip. I never got gas until the light came on.

I'm only saying its possible to hit 400+ miles per tank if given the right conditions. If the conditions are wrong, then of course you won't get anywhere near that. During that same summer I lived only 3 miles away from my internship and did 50-60mph going there. during the weeks i didn't go visit my girl, i got around 260 miles per tank.

BUAHAHAHAHA, you --->

I guess that doesn't qualify as "NORMAL" driving, which I emphasized so many times here, now does it?

...especially with all o2 sensors being dead, that's when fuel burning would differ most. It's like saying "I did 500 miles on a tank of gas with my Maxima because my fuel pump was a little clogged and one of the cylinders did not work for whatever reason, but I still managed to drive"

I must admit, I have a manual and in-town and getting on it a pretty good bit I only average like 20-21mpg.

However, I have to stop you for a minute, BOSS...The first trip I ever too in my max was from Dallas, TX to Jackson, MS. I went to Dallas to buy my car from someone, and then drove it back. The trip is recorded at like 414 miles and I filled up in Dallas on the way out of town. I made it all the way home without the light on.

One other time, I went down to Ft. Walton Beach, FL from here(5hr trip.....320 miles) and got an impressive 28 mpg on that whole tank.

The thing that I will say is that you have to granny drive a maxima to get that kind of gas mileage. I am talkin' shifting early at like 3k rpm's and letting it coast a lot. Also, on that trip to Florida, I used the cruise control the whole time with no traffic.

I will say that it is not normal to get that many miles on a tank....In fact, I usually get about 350-360. However, if you will do the math on 27 or 28 mpg, you will see that it is above 415 miles per tank. Even if I just put in 15.5 gallons, at 27mpg, that is 418.5 miles on a tank. I have put a little more in a tank than that before, so it can be achieved.

500 miles for a tank of gas in a maxima is BS!!! Anything over about 450 max is pretty much just cra p!!!

Just did some figuring...if you can get 28mpg on 18 gallons and use every drop, you will run for 504 miles. Running at 27 mpg and using every drop of the 18 gallon tank, you would run for 486 miles. Up above Max mentioned times over 30 mpg. I'm guessing that if conditions are perfect combined with a perfect touch of the throttle, it may be possible. I realize that estimated mpg figures supplied by car makers are just estimates...but, they are pretty realistic estimates. My thinking according to most good figures involved is that most 450/tankful runs are BS stories and that all 500+/tankful stories are total BS. We can agree to disagree as long as it is in an adult way. As you can see, I don't get involved in insult matches here...I simply like to discuss things.

Do you want to see my fill-up history? My trip average is 441 miles with fill-up average of 17.84 gallons. Bear in mind this is with 50/50 driving. On an extended trip, I think 500 miles would be no problem!

P.S.: This kind of mileage can be yours! The Max is for sale! Check out my ad in the 'Maximas for Sale' section!

OMG, that is just such BS. I will no longer post here because I cannot take this kind of BS from naive people who think 500 is reachable, when 450 is rather impossible.

when you post things with definitive "proof", BOSS, you just shut down all other idea that you might be wrong. I said that it was pretty much an impossibility to get even 30mpg which means that the 500 miles from a tank were pretty much out. However, who am I (or you or anyone else) to question this guy if he says that he got that kind of mileage. I mean, he may be an idiot and doesn't know how to check mpg. On the other hand, he might just have done what he said, and been one of the rare cases. You cannot refute that because he is the one that saw the mileage.

Along those same lines, you have to take me at my word because I said that I was on track to get 450 miles in one tank. You say it is rather impossible, but with me getting the 28mpg that I did, I would only have to put in 16.071 gallons to get that mileage. (450/28=16.071)

Anyway, all I am saying is that we have to kind of take this guy at his word. However, we all know that it is not the norm.
The norm is to get about 350 per tank if you enjoy the powerband at all in the max.

I am here to tell you the 500+ is possible. I have been reading this thread so I when I got back from vacation this week, I was eager to post my findings.

I took a trip from Lexington NC, to Destin FL last week 11 hours, 621 miles. I got 477 miles on the 1st tank of gas. I was freaking out b/c in Alabama I passed a gas station and I had 435 miles on the tank but the gas light hadn't come on yet, a few miles down the road sure enough the gas light came on, I thought no biggie surely there will be another gas in a few miles, little did I know that it would be almost 40 miles later before I would find another gas station, I was freaking out, I was in the middle of nowhere on a 2 lane road thinking I was going to run out of gas. When I filled up I put 17.02 gallons of gas in the tank, so I had 1 1/2 gallons of gas left (477/17.02 = 28.02 mpg's) so as you can see I would have went over 500 miles
On the way back home it gets better. I filled up and ate in FL, I drove 483 miles almost 7 hours before I stopped again. The gas light didn't come on until the 461 mark. I put in 16.42 gallons of gas (483/16.42 = 29.41 mpg's).

Almost all highway driving, very little stopping. I only go 65 in a 55 and 65 in a 60 and 75 in a 70 so I didn't do any outrageous speeding. I have a pretty heavy sound system and my wife packed was seemed like every d@mn article of clothing she had so we had a couple of suitcases.

Now I drive 27 miles 1 way (almost all highway) to work everyday, my gas light usually comes on around 375 - 420 range before I put in 15.5 - 17 gallons of gas so I usually average about 23.5 - 26 mpg's.

Boss, I don't think this makes me cool by any means for getting such good gas mileage, and I personally don't give a **** if you believe me or not, it is not going to hurt my feelings one bit, but for the other people that actually have an open mind and are curious what is possible I am here to tell you it is. Boss you are so convinced it's not possible that you are not even reading what the people are writing.

In conclusion, IMO it would have to be a very long trip before you would see these extreme mpg. My car is stock, I just bought new tires about 2 weeks ago and I always run 93 grade.

So next time you are taking a long trip just know what is possible but take my advice, if you get to the 450 regaurdless if your gas light is on or not and you see a gas station and you don't know where the h3ll you are or when the next gas station is, do yourself a favor and go ahead and stop, it will save you a lot of worrying and you won't have to explain about 300 times to your wife why you didn't stop back there

Oh yeah, all most forgot 1 more thing. Watching/listening to 5 of your favorite DVD's make a 11 our car ride not seem so bad, I always watch/listen to movies on long car trips that I have seen a bunch of times so I can keep my eyes on the road but peek down at the screen every once in awhile, especially for my favorite parts

This is a copy of a spreadsheet that I keep for my SE-L. As you notice most of my mileage is in the 23-26 range. Maybe the older model(95-97) max's have more power, but less mpg?

2nd column from the left is the actual mileage before fillup,3rd is mpg and 4th column is the potential range at that mpg. All over 400 miles!

dam, that has to be some serious p*$$y driving to get 407 miles per tank. I've never even seen 350 miles per tank and thats after clean throttle, 02 sensor replacements, new fuel filter, bah.

glad to see this thread is still alive

it prolly is. I mean, those are the signs of it being bad. I would change your fuel filter, plugs, air filter, and ks, and see what happens.

You can check it in the How-to's at the top of the forum.

depends on what kind of p*$$y driving you're talking about. when i was driving 240 miles one way to see my girlfriend every other weekend I was hitting 405-410 miles per tank doing between 75mph and 100mph. That was going to get p*$$y driving.
