besides manual vs auto, this is probably the biggest poll of maxima.org history

fill up your tank, drive it until you get to about E, and then fill it up again. record the exact amount of gallons you purchased, and the amount of miles you drove.
Take 18.5 Gallons - The Gallons You Used = the amount of gallons left in your tank.
take the Amount of Gallons you Used and divide it by the amount of miles you drove
Say you fill up 16.5 gallons, and you drove 370 miles. you'd get 22.4242424...
multiply that number by 18.5 and thats how much you should get to a tank. so 414 miles to a tank.
good luck.

Only problem is that different gas pumps have different auto-stop points and even if you always use the same pump at the same station, it's not terribly precise. However, the error will admittedly be minor.

you have actually been able to put/fill your tank to 18.5 gallons. the most i have ever been able to put into the tank was about 16.5-16.9Originally Posted by killcrap

on my highway trips (Hartford CT - Miami Florida) 16.5 gallons usually would yeild about 400-420 miles.
there are some serious lead foot folks in here.
I usually get around 390-415 in the city and 430-505 pure highway
edit: Actually, I just dug into the records. When I was driving cross country somewhere in the middle of the country I went 548 miles on a tank!!! Pure cruising of course and I don't remember how fast I was going but that was with NOBODY on the road. I was driving around 5-7 hour stints at a time between fill ups. I was retarded. Shouldn't do stuff like that. Bad for the brain ;(.
edit again... I was completely stock back then on 15" steelies... (548). More recent numbers at the beginning of this.

On a full tank
400 HWY
375 City
170k Miles on my 96
I made a trip to Ohio back in the fall. When I was driving back, I reset to see what I would get coming home to Maryland. I got 460 miles.. I could of gotten another 20 miles out of that tank. I have never gotten that again tho...

I recently took a trip down to portland from tacoma and around a few other places and when i filled back up i had gone 411 miles. So i guess thats how many miles i get to a tank. I am lost on how you guys can only get 250 or less? Maybe you all should slow down a bit! Just my 2 cents.
i get an average of 24.5 miles to the gallon
and get about 400 miles to the tank its a 1/2 and 1/2 mis of city to highway

according to my spreadsheet...
Total Miles: 6301
Total Gal: 289.771
Total Mi/gal: 21.74476
Best tank: 32.30404 mpg (all highway/204mi)
Worse tank: 13.96471 mpg (all city/243mi/lots of errands for family on that tank)
I've also gotten 397miles per tank off 16.673gallons. could have probably pushed it to 450 or so if i tried on that tank.
this is most probably the longest thread... longest poll thread i've ever saw.

I tabulate my mi/gal on a weekly basis. I am getting approximately 22-24 mpg with 90% city driving. I drive like a grandma most of the time (shifting at about 2-2.5k rpm, I have a 5 speed). I haven't yet took my max on the highway for a trip yet.
When I first got my max I found myself at the gas pump 2-3 times a week and was getting about 10-12 mpg. Eventually the SES light came on for a front 02 sensor. Replaced it and my gas mileage shot through the roof.
My previous car (4-banger power) averaged about 26-28 mpg in the city and averaged 42 on highway trips (w/ avg of 65-70mph).
'90 mazda 626 (and of course a 5 speed)

I'm with you--I have a spreadsheet over 101,000 miles and coming on 7 years--OUCH!!!!! My avg. is 24.1--just use common sense, if that is over 101,000 miles, it's pretty hard to move that avg.Originally Posted by Batxel

In the old days, I have hit as high as 32 mpg from Upstate NY to Canada (actually on the way back). Lately, I seem lucky if I can get 26-27 highway. But it makes a big difference where you're going--just think, if you have to go up and down hills, that will cost mpg-wise. And I never go anywhere anymore in this car except Phila. to NYC or CT, and Phila. to DC. It'd be interesting to see if I did that upstate NY to Canada round-trip, if I could even touch 30 or not.....maybe as the car gets older it's a little less efficient, not sure. But around here, it's 20-21 if only city.

I get around 20 to 22 miles per gallon. Probably 40/60 city/highway. I drive WOT a lot, esp. on highway. (Not so much since my last ticket.) Birmingham, AL is in a valley with many hills. Bad on breaks and killer on gas mileage. Usually get 320 miles or so before I get gas. What's the terrain like for you guys? Frank, I'm assuming you got flat land, right?
BTW, yes, this is a long thread. I've been posting here for like ten years.

I do both hwy and city driving about evenly...I get about 23-24 average. Last tank I thought I was getting horrible gas mileage cause it was on half a tank at 130 miles...but I pushed it to 400miles somehow and got 23 mpg for that tank......I had to put 17.26 gallons in the tank. It is an 18.5 gal tank, correct?

I've heard about the hills in Heatherwood too, man. I think the only way to get good mileage around here is just to lightfoot it, which is not an option at all, really. I didn't buy a manual tranny maxima to lightfoot it, know what I mean? Yeah you all do. But if you're down on the plains, I guess 23-24 is good, but I'd think you should be getting 25 or 65 mpg. Maybe you tend to stomp the gas alot too, hunh?Originally Posted by NissanSE98

16 gallons out of an 18 gallon tank and 27-28 mpg cruising at 75-ish on the highway in the summer (hotter air is thinner and has less drag) get me to the 450 range on a tank. Right now cutting through 5-15F air at the same speeds I'm only getting 24-25 mpg, which is still maybe around 350 miles. Depends on how low I take it.

In most places in the US, it's drier in the winter, though. I would think hot moisture-laden air would cause more drag than cold dry air. Furthermore, cold dry air allows better combustion in the VQ, which certainly increases performance and probably increases efficiency.Originally Posted by SteVTEC

After recently changing my front 02 sensors I've been able to get 390 miles with my typical driving habits (mostly highway) instead of the 320 max I used to get.

I consistently get 28 mpg on the highway and have gone almost 560 miles on a tank once or twice. Straight city driving I get about 18.5 mpg. Car is a 95 SE 5-speed with 56,300 original miles - owned since day 1.

This poll's title is "ideal" mileage. I'd say, um.. 650 miles per tank is ideal, tho im hovering around 325. thats cuz of 4, 4 mile trips/day, each with 1.3 mi hiway.18-19 mpg auto

highway driving i get about 400g till empty........freeway its about 320-260 depending how i drive....i have a heav foot when i drive in san diego hahahha

when i had my maxima I got anywhere between 300 - 325 per tank, a mixture of highway and city driving. Now I have an A4 and the gas mileage isn't as good, prob around 240 per tank
Senior Member
I went from 320 miles a tank, to 280, and now sometimes 260 lol in only one year, what can i say? I dont know how i would live with a v4, luv the max for its speed, and mods help it out too, hopefully i dont go under 260 cause then id become broke.

i would consistently get 400 miles to a tank if i would wait to fill up. generally don't let it get below quarter tank. daily commute is 70 miles round trip. p*$$^ driving or not, i don't insist on beating the crap out of my car every chance i get. long trips = good mileage, but lots of miles on car.
Senior Member
I get between 340 and 360 all city driving. The first time I dove the car was when I picked it up from ohio. i drove it back to Georgia and the first tank of gas I got 500 miles. I told myself I wouldn't pee untill I had to get gas. I was floating by the time the light came on. This has been a great car.

Daily city driving and everything else I get about 230-240 to the gallon. But just like mostly everyone here, I have quite a heavy foot as well so that could cause a slight decline.
NYC, just like you, I've done the drive to NC a few times. And max is very good down that way. I gas up only 2 times (in NJ & VA) starting w/ 1/2 - 3/4 tank from NY. And round trip travel mileage is around 1600 (easily 400+ a full tank).
