IDEAL mileage from a full tank of gas?

J/KBut seriously this thread is like a grandparent thread now. Wow. I know I have posts in it since early after I joined the org.
This past weekend, I got 398 miles (the light hadn't come on yet). I was going to push my max until the empty gas light came on - but chickened out. Those are pure highway miles (LA to SF).
Under normal conditions I get ~310 miles to a tank.

I get north of 350m during city driving and 400+ on the highway. According to my trip computer I get about 25mpg in the city and 30mpg on the highway. AND I have a very heavy foot! I know that sounds outrageous but it's true.
I hit 650KM's on 1 tank. Would've went more but gas was too cheap to pass up. Mind you i am auto and it was highway km's. Other than that i can't really say because i hate putting lots of fuel in my car because of the weight.

It's always been my concern that people with 26 or 27 or 28 mpg aren't calculting their gas mileage properly. I have never gotten above 25 on the highway. I stay at about 20 to 21 on the roads no matter how I drive. Now I have an Evap canister fault and a purge valve problem and some other emissions stuff that the light tells me need fixing, but the car isn't smoking so that light's not really a priority. Anyone suppose I'd get better mileage if I fixed all that crap?
I got 29 MPG (95% highway at 75 MPH) last summer and I calculated based on raw miles and gallons put in, so I know it's correct as long as my odometer is correct. If you're never getting about 25 yes, I would think that fixing your emissions stuff would improve gas mileage slightly. Also, you could have a bad O2 sensor or just need a tune up, neither of which would necessarily cause a check engine light.

I just bought my 96 Maxima SE 5 spd last month in Tampa, FL through Ebay. Filled it up and drove to Orlando, spent the night and drove up to Atlanta. Cruised at 80 mph most of the way, got caught in two road construction spots going 10 mph for about 10 miles. Had over 400 miles on the tank when I filled up. I remember the miles divided by the gallons was 30.5 mpg. Got 27 to 28 mpg on the next two tanks that were a mixture of city/highway. Must say I'm very pleased. Great power, ride and good fuel enconomy to boot.

That's not bad for city driving. I only get about 19 in the city and that's constantly under 40 mph, with traffic lights etc. However, straight highway driving I have had as high as 31.5 mpg and consistently 29+ on a 600-mile round trip, which includes a lot of climbing.
Man I'm friggin starting to hate you guys. The next time I drive 150 or 200 miles I'm going to drive from fill-up to fill-up to make sure that it is 100% highway. I want to see what my mileage is then. 31 is unimaginable to me.
I got consistant 525-550 kms a tank last fall (315-330 miles) with a bad Knock Sensor and a bad oxygen sensor. This year I have a 3.5 but all O2 sensors are new and hopefully the 3.5 KS works.
Seriously, though. Can I request that people actually tell what their miles/gallon gas mileage is? I mean straight up number of miles you drove divided by the amount of fuel you used, fill-up to fill-up? Everybody's view of the needle is totally subjective. Some wait for the light to come on, some wait till the car is on vapors. (I think that'd be more accurate, but not good, of course.) Telling the number of miles you drove on a "tank" is not really a whole lot to go on. Unless you're one of the 500 to 600 guys. BTW, 500 to 600 guys, where is your needle when you decide to fill up?
damn this thread has been open since 10-2002
anyway i once 440 driving from slc to vegas in like 5 hrs which is amazing time. i usually fill up at 370, whne my light comes on with mixed driving

I normally do a fill above E, but past 1/4 tank around 330 on average... occasionally gotten over 350... (its a mix, highway, city driving, mostly highway). On straight highway, its been almost up to 450...
I just drove one tank with stop and go. Was filling racks at hotels and restaurants. Drive quarter mile get out go another quarter mile stuff. Should of been horrible for the mpg, but went 378 miles on the tank ( no highway driving) filled it up with 16.2 gals for 23.3 mpg. I'm amazed it was that good with that must stop and go and idling while I ran in. Also glad I was only doing it to help out a friend.
Can a worn clutch contribute to bad gas mileage? If I pull off sometimes without raising the engine speed, it will kind of buck on me, or more accurately it sort of hesitates. And the pedal is pretty stiff. I have no trouble depressing it, but it's nowhere near like it was when I first got the car. When I first got it, I kept peeling out cause I wasn't used to the clutch being that easy to press down and I'd come off the clutch to fast I guess. But I'm wondering if during the hesitation and me hitting the gas if gas is being wasted. Any experts want to answer?
For my last two fillups:
95% HWY driving @ 75-80mph 502miles at 16.566 gallons 30.30mpg (approx 561miles to E@18.5gallons)
95% CTY driving 416miles at 16.923gallons = 24.58mpg (approx 455miles to E@18.5gallons)
95% HWY driving @ 75-80mph 502miles at 16.566 gallons 30.30mpg (approx 561miles to E@18.5gallons)
95% CTY driving 416miles at 16.923gallons = 24.58mpg (approx 455miles to E@18.5gallons)
I consistently get 30+ mpg when I go on all-highway road trips. I just got back from a trip, and I got 32 mpg on both tanks of gas. I have an unmodified GXE automatic; the automatic will get better fuel economy on the highway because it's geared higher, and the GXE's skinny tires have lower road resistance than the SE's.
