CV joint or wheel bearing - How to tell?

Max is making noises - I want to fix it asap but I don't want to waste money on the wrong part. There is a click-click-clicking noise coming from the right wheel, only when making left turns (in middle of turn, not when steering wheel is moving). It's pretty loud and I can feel it through the gas pedal. Funny thing is it's only audible when the car is really cold, ie. in the morning or when the cars been sitting for at least a few hours. I jacked up the car to see if there was any play in the up and down motion of the wheel, but it's solid. I also checked the boot and it's really clean, no rips or tears or grease whatsoever (still looks new). I noticed this a little while after I changed my strut bearings a couple months ago, and I did it with only one side of the car jacked up so I had to put alot of weight on that one hub to line up the bolts. Steering is very smooth. Since there are no visual clues I'm just going to make an educated guess before I go changing parts. I'm thinking the CV get knocked out of line (is that possible?) But I wanted to get opinions from anyone else who's had experience with either of these problems. If it may be a factor I take curves a little hard once in a while but not much cornering at all (Gotta love the sprints w/ agx ).

Sounds like a boot/joint to me. Needs greased, repaired/ or replace my man.

My buddies did that, and they had to replace it b/c he drove on it so long, the mechanic said if he drove on it any longer, the wheel would have fallen off

Thats pretty unlikely. That noise is annoying, but only when the car is cold. After it warms up, I can turn any which way with no noise.

I ahve the exact proble, well almost. Mine makes the click click clack sound when turning left adn it coems from teh right wheel. I notice it more after a good highway run, and hear it better in a parking garage. I checked the rubber or whatever and saw now cracks or leaks.....Let me know what the solution was to this, **** last thing I need is my wheel flying off when I'm racing down the highway!

Tom is correct. CV joints click, and wheel bearings moan.

You could bring it to a local auto shop if you know how to take it out of the car. They would probably charge you 60 or 75 bucks to fix it. You may need just a boot or the joint depending on how long it was messed up. Its not that bad of a job, but you do have to drain the tranny fluid (i think, in manual definitely). If you need the left axle, I have one for 60 bucks and split shipping

Holy ish! This is starting to sound complicated. I'll have to research it some more. Drain the tranny fluid, damn! I will for sure get abck to you on the axle situation. I'm going to try and find a write up on this. Thanks!
