What age/weight/height is your child? There are different classes of car seats (e.g. babyseats are for kids who are <20lbs & boosters are typically for 20-40lbs). 5-point seatbelts are good for kids around 3-6 yrs. (I'm generalizing since all kids are different sizes & heights). I've got a 9 & almost-6 yr. old so I might be able to share some insight with you. Aside from that, I'd suggest Consumers Reports as a good place for reference info where a lot of different products are compared based on many factors. Your local library should have stacks of them.
Oh yeah, our Max started off as a family car but has morphed slightly over the past year.

BTW, great pic of the center console....
We used an Evenflo and a Century when we had our 97 SE, and they both fit quite well. I can't remember the models off hand, but there were no issues at all. The Century appears to have a better latch, where the 4 belts come together, but I am unfamiliar on actual test results.
Just make sure, with any seat, that you tighten the belt down as firmly as possible, so that there is NO play. Sometimes you can get a little more of a snug fit by placing your body weight on the seat, as you install it. Also make sure the belt is pulled all the way out, and that it clicks as it retracts, as you tighten the seat down, as it is locked from being pulled out.
You might want to do a search on child seat fitment and safety. I am sure their are published results online.

Any of the 5 point style. I think the one my 2 1/2 year old is in is either a graco or evenflo... My infant daughters is one of those as well....cant remember the makes. The 03 and up models...cars and car seats use the new "latch" system tho....much easier and safer.
Just make sure you hook them up like they say....put some weight on the seats as you retract the seat belt....no play is needed between the seatbelt/carseat.
I got the upper teather mounts from nissan (they mount on your rear speaker deck) Some newer maxes have them already.
Oh...and watch for recalls on child seats too.....

Also make sure you use the seatbelt clip all the time. I am 6'5 and getting my son in and out-made me sell my 99 Max SE ltd edition and buy a van. Still have my 95 though.
Can't add much to all the other good info already provided. I also use a 5 point seatbelt/seat for him.

we had an evenflow "snap in" for our son the first 9 months before he outgrew it....i was pleased with ours, and the "carry in" aspect is nice too....they snap onto carts at the grocery store and everything. For the larger seats that we switched to we have Cosco....one is a triad, the other is a touriva...same seat, but the plushness varies...the touriva is the "cheap one" but still ranked 4th by consumer reports last year (the triad was 3rd, and the top two aren't made anymore). i remedied the lack of plushness in the cheap one with some extra carpet foam behind the cover. we kept these rear facing till 1 year and turned them around...he was a trim 24# by then anyway. my only dislike was the recline level built into them is not adjustable. when we had the cosco's rear facing i rolled up a bath towel to put in the corner of the car seat, and then set the baby seat on top of that and drew it down tight....that way he was laying back a little more...otherwise it was almost straight up and down.
5 point important as a "safety mod"
One of the seats I use for 20-35 lbs is Century 2000 STE, it has a five point harness. Realistically, each child needs three different car seats until he's big enough to use the adult belt only:
1. The rear-facing snap in seat for infant
2. The front-facing Century 2000.
3. The "racing" seat/booster seat with built-in 5 point harness.
4. The racing seat without the built in harness, using just the car's 3 point seat belt. Even my 8-year old uses this, he can see out the car better.
All of these seats are available in a 5 point harness, which is more important than brand, price, or style. By the way, I haven't needed the tether but plan to get it soon. I would be very interested in a product that provided 5-point protection beyond the 40 lb limit the "racing" seat has.

My 9 month old is just about to outgrow his rear facing seat...I too have been wondering what to get for him. Maybe a new car. My i30 is too low, and my Expy with 35" tires is too high....hmm. A minivan maybe? Um, no.
