Preferred Oil Filter?

Who would have thought that oil filter selection was such a science. The poll choices seem to be the favorites. Which one do you prefer?

The only one in that list I would avoid is the PureONE. All others are good choices and should be dictated by budget and availability.

Instead of the PureONE, I would consider the Bosch 3323 as well. You can't go wrong with any of them.

Most concur it's flow is a bit too restrictive (i.e. tries to filter TOO much). Also the external can is relatively thin (about half as thick as the other filters mentioned above) compared to other filters. It's not bad, but for $6 the Bosch 3323 is a better overall made filter.

Does Fram suck also??
Don't ever by a Fram oil filter. For the same price or cheaper, a better filter can be purchased.

Fairly comprehensive oil filter study.

Dissection of dozens of filters to determine effectiveness and quality of build. Fram is pretty much crap...

I want to vote fram too I love the look of orange canister. Oh..and that cool rubber grip texture top for ease of removal. Why should I buy a filter wrench when I can get a good work out using my hand on the fram grip top?

I guess an excerpt taken from the study referenced by Maximaah says it all (not to mention the many posts by Bill99gxe..."Years ago Fram was a quality filter manufacturer. Now their standard filter (the radioactive-orange cans) is one of the worst out there."

I've seen other studies that weren't quite as harsh, but the general consensus is that Fram is way down in the food chain.

So...at 28 votes, the clear front runner is the Nissan OEM filter, with the Mobil1 filter second. I'm guessing that the Republicans prefer the OEM and the Democrats go for the Mobil1.

I bought a pack of 10 off of ebay a year ago for $18 shipped. They are OE brand. They have the anti drain design. I change my oil regularly anyways so its not that big of a deal. But for $1.80...I change it every 3,000 miles so my whole oil change is around $6.

In reality, the STP S6941 is the best overall choice, especially if you aren't doing the lemming Jiffy Lube 3,000 mile intervals. It's oversized and will do a better filtration job after the 3k point than an OEM filter.....

The only thing working against the S6941 is that I know of half a dozen to 10 people who are actually using it and its use has only been spread by me. Word of mouth is difficult to convey on a forum day after day.

The Nissan OEM wins because that's what people are comfortable with and they think Nissan will roll out the red carpet should the VQ seize up before the 60k powertrain expires when we all know Nissan will fight tooth and nail in replacing engines regardless of oil history.

in my area (Silicon Valley). I have been
using them for a long time

Cool. I wish Baldwin filters were more readily available nationwide in mainstream parts stores.

I run synthetic oil in my car so my choice of filter would be mobil1 because they use synthethic media in their filters. It has a better filtering capability and lower pressure drop. Some detergetnts in synthetic oils might dissolve the paper medias used in most oil filters. I just don't want to take that chance. I used Fram once and after the oil change (6000 miles) I cut the filter open and it looked funny the paper looked cheap and ripped easily.
