High idle ( 1800 RPMS ) after spirited driving on the highway
Ok.. so it has been cold in atlanta lately.. my cold idle is high, but where it should be. after the engine warms up it settles back down to about 700. ( I set it that high )
Well tonight after driving on the highway above the posted speed limit, when I put it in "N" or "P" the idle shot up to like 1800 RPM's.
While in drive it was just above 1000 rpm's , high as well.
I pulled over to a gas station and checked to make sure the cable was not caught on something and even checked to make sure the floor mat was not pushing on the gas pedal.
The temp gauge was in about the center of the gague.
I will let it sit tonight and see if it is still doing it in the AM.
But I drove like 30 minutes and it was fine. It just seemed after the highway run it was out of whack
Any thoughts????
BTW.. CAI,Y-Pipe,MEVI,CAT-back

I've noticed it in altimas, sentras, and maximas...after driving hard (near redline) for some time, the car will idle funky...like hover around 1000 rpm for 2seconds, then dip down to where it's supposed to idle. This's really noticable with 5sp...drive @ 5000rpm for 20seconds, then hit the clutch. The rpms will drop, hover at 1000rpm, then drop again. It's funny cuz it happens in all mid 90s and newer Nissans I've driven.

Baggs two days ago I was doing routine maintenance on my car and I put everything back together and forgot to hook up the MAF air sensor to the car. I went on ahead and turned the car and the idle on the car jumpe up to 1500RPMS . I was definitely in a world of WTF is going on. My BOV was blowing the air back out since the car was boosting. Went back to the car and saw the CEL light. Right then I knew I forgot to hook up the MAF sensor to the car. I really hope your MAF is not gone bad. I doubt it but thats how my idle kept on going up and down.

Thurz- It was like this for about 30 minutes... and like that when I turned the car off last night.. I gotta run and help a buddy work on his house so we will see if it is crazy this morning
BTW I am an AUTO I think it was clear just forgot to mention it
dwap-
Jay- I will look at my maf, but I have driven this speed before with out this happening. That is what gets me. Even with the VI I drove this speed a few times... so I do not know. And I have not unhooked my maf.. maybe I will test it
Thanks for the suggestions

This has happened to me also after a spirited run.
However, it goes back down to 500-600 after a couple of minutes.
Once, it didn't. I turned off the engine & a 30 seconds later, I restart and the RPMS are back to normal
I did check things under the hood & everything seems to be hooked up okay!

My car has the same idle problem. Mine will do it under normal conditions though. It will idle very high sometimes when I push in the clutch, I have to tap the gas when I stop to get it to idle back down. It does it about 90% of the time when I have the A/C on. But only about 10% of the time with the A/C off. I get tired of my car idling at 1800 at red lights. The guys at the Nissan dealer didn't have any ideas on what could be wrong.

dashing- I will look for it and keep this in the brain housing group for future reference

Mine started idling a little higher and the over the corse of a year it just kept getting higher and higher, it is up to about 1850 now. I am glad it is winter and I don't need the A/C because I don't have the money to let Nissan play with it for $65 an hour to try to figure it out.

1850!?!?!
that is either going to smoke your torque converter or clutch (auto vs. manual)

It mostly only idles like that if the air is on. I just have to tap the gas to make it idle down, which is still a pain. I have a manual so it isn't hurting anything, it just ****es me off when my stuff doesn't work right. I think it has to do with the computer.

man it happened again last night. With no high speed runs on the highway.
Do you have a MEVI? Or just a SC?
Did it happen with or with out the SC?
I have had my car over 2 years and this never happened before... but I put the mevi on about 3 months ago..so it might have something to do with that.
I am going to spend lots of time next week on this.. just trying to get as much info from you as possible
thanks

Earlier today, I ran against a modded IS300 upto 130mph. *touch wood* It didn't happen this time, however my CEL light is back on. Same exact stupid P0420 code.
It could be the MEVI. Run an OBDII scan first and see if the ECU is throwing any "ghost" codes.
PS: IS300 was owned by the dashingMax

my car does the same thing baggs. but i havnt really noticed if its like that after spirited driving or not. its more or less just spur of the moment. my car usualy idols, around 700 in 1st 2nd D or R, but when sometimes when i put it in neutral or park it goes as high as 1700-2k

hmm.. well thanks dashingmax.. i will do that.. no CEL, but I will check the codes.. and 130 is fun huh?
dtr- when does it hapeen the most.. summer/fall/winter/spring? or is it just sparatic?

I would suggest that you re-adjust your throttle cable. Tighten the adjusment nut until the throttle cam starts to move, then back off the nut 1-1/2 turns. While your at it, lube the cable.
Also, try cleaning the butterfly and throat of the throttle body with carb cleaner.
BTW: It's RPM's

In short - I had the same problem but with a 5spd.
Problem solved with : replace neutral/reverse switch & adjust of cable (not idle set screw).
