Engine died, now I need help.

I have a problem. The engine in my car died last week. I took it to a shop a they told me it will cost $5000 to replace it. Is it really that much labor involved because I'm going to have to replace the motor myself(but I have never done this bfore). Does anyone know any good websites that has relaible engines for cheap? Any help would be helpful. Thank you.

Car-Part.com

They have lots of VQ30DEs listed on there site available in California, some as low as $650 dollars.

Replacing a motor is a difficult venture for a first timer, I would suggest to you that you find someone who has had experience replacing car engines help you to get the job done. Your also gonna need to rent an engine lift too, you can call local auto parts stores to see where you can rent one from.

What the heck broke on your engine by the way? Did the repair shop tell you what went wrong or did they tell you it just died? I find it hard to believe a VQ30DE just dying for no good reason.

It sounds like it might've been a Nissan dealership shop... there's this place around my house but nowhere close to Oceanside...I live in Lynwood...near L.A. That shop is known to sell and install engines a lil pricey but they do a good job and thy quoted my car under $3400 installed for something they called a VQ30DE-M which they said would fit in my car. These engines come straight from Japan, and after asking around nobody knew what the heck a VQ30DE-M is. Another reliable shop quoted me $1800 for just the engine. Most shops can install these engines...they aren't as special as rotary engines.

5000 is not that bad...a good re-man motor (go with ATK) is 3200 + install.

What happened to your engine?

I got oil changes every three months. I took great care of the motor. It had 125,xxx miles on it. They told me that there was no oil in the motor which was completely not true.

Well something bad must have happened to blow a VQ...No Oil may sound right if thats what they said...125,000 is not even half life for these engines. Did it happen when you were just cruizing, piston lock, what happened exactly...Im very curious if you dont mind me asking

I'm with Matt.. by those calculations, my motor could blow in about 2 weeks

Did YOU change the oil or take it somewhere to get done?

if you starved it of oil and didn't notice, it could definately do damage.. something must have happened..
This is the 1st time I am hearing of a VQ dying out of the blue from regular use..
there are people with simlar milage and turbos/superchargers and so forth giving their cars daily dose of abuse and they are running just fine...

I took it to a shop to have the oil changed so I had records that I got the oil changed just in case was to happen to my car. I was just cruising down the freeway when the motor began to lose compression and eventually died. I changed the once myself because I did an engine flush at the same time. There was oil in the motor before it blew, I checked it and also the guy that works on my car at the shop told me that there was enough oil in the car. So I don't know.

I changed mine for this: new motor-1400 install-900.
Shouldnt cost more than that because I paid a lot for my engine because it had 8,000 miles on it.

Well its timing chain and that was my problem. The casing around the timing cahin has a seal and it was deteriorating on my engine which let oil leak into the engine and fry a oring or two. The cost of repair would be 5000 for that so I said f-it and i dropped in a new engine with 120,000 less miles on it.
