by-pass oil filter

Recently bought a 99 GLE with 21 K kilometers on it. Looking for the best choice of oil and oil filters. Will probably go with Amsoil, but I am tempted by their by-pass oil filter because I believe getting the small contaminents out will help. Its pricy.

Has anyone used this set-up? What do they think?

What exactly is the "by-pass system"? What is the theory behind it that makes it seem better. I am just curious because I have not seen them before.

In a nutshell, the bypass filter sucks off a portion of the engine oil at a time and filters it down to a much smaller mircon level than is possible with a full flow filter. They also have the capability of removing a small amount of water. These filters can dramatically reduce wear and greatly extend the useful life of the oil. They are predominantly found in larger commercial applications.
