$79 worth it?

$79 worth it?
My AC system has been stinking lately(smells like fart or skunk) and I saw this coupon in penny saver for AC system cleanup for $79 bucks. They gonna clean up fungus, spores, bla bla bla but I dunno if they gonna fill up the freons. My max is pretty old (95'), and I want to ask some of you professionals out there if this is worth doing. What I really want to ask is, will it definately get rid of the stinkin smell?
Also, does coolant have anything to do with the smell? I think my coolant hasn't been changed for years..

Re: Re: $79 worth it?
I'm pretty sure I'm not spending 80 bucks for this kind of service, but if I can't find a way to get rid of it, I guess I'll be 80 poorer..
I tried looking for some kind of do-it-yourself writeup for AC cleaning but couldnt find it. Can anyone help me clean my ac system up? (cheap way)

I'd try a can of lysol through the intake ducts with the system on full tilt before spending that kind of money.

Refrigerant doesn't need to be changed ever. You just need to make sure the system is fully charged. The problems come when refrigerant leaks out and drops to the point where the AC pressure switch deactivates the system. Has nothing to do with what is stinking, refrigerant should never ever come in contact with the air you breathe.

Best thing to do is use a can of Lysol (in your favorite scent).
Just put your AC on high, open up the vents, put your windows down, and spray into the intake ducts on the driver side outside your windshield. Use about 1/4 to 1/2 the can and let the AC run for 30 minutes or so.
I do this once a year and have never had a problem with any odors from my AC.

Just go to an auto supply store (the ones that supply to garages, NOT to independent people), and buy a can of HVAC anti-fungal, anti-bacterial deoderizer. It comes in a large can, and has enough to do 3-5 cars. You basically set your system to run full hot, when it gets hot, spray into the intake area. Then repeat under full cold. Your car will have a scent for 2-3 days (whatever the deoderizer is scented), and will dissapate leaving no smell whatsoever afterwards.
I did this last summer, and I loved the results.

Lysol or any other air freshener will only mask your problem, not correct it.
Save you $$ you can clean your evaporator yourself. Here's the link to the company that sells the cleaning kit.

You can access the evaporator coils through the resistor pack opening. This system will clean and kill the bacteria thats causing your smell. Shouldn't take you more then 1/2 hour to perform this process.
