Loud Tranny noise on 97- 5-speed

Ok I dont want to get all worried yet but since it has gotten cold up here in MA, whenever i start my car after it has been sitting in the cold for a few hours when i take my foot off the clutch and have it in neutral, i get a loud, almost like a rubbing noise (bearings??) When i push the clutch back in it goes away, it only does that until its warm. I am going to change the tranny fluid soon and im already using redline mt-90. Thanks for any help guys.

When you release the clutch in neutral the input shaft on the transmission starts to spin. If your hearing bearing noise then, the bearings internal to the transmission are developing a problem. When you push the clutch back in, the shaft stoppes spinning if the car isn't moving, which is why the noise goes away. Hopw many miles are on this transmission??

What's your take on the opposite of what you describe as noted here:

When I saw your thread originally, I didn't really have much to add. After looking at it again, I would say the the problem shouldn't be related to the mounts. You made the mounts much harder than they were before, so the should transmit vibration and sound much better. I believe the mounts simply allow you to hear what has been there all along. Have you been able to drive another car that have mounts similar to yours to see the differences?

Since the problem goes away when the clutch is in or the transmisison is in neutral, I would tend to think the problem isn't on the transmission side of things, but rather with the interface between the transmission and the engine, especially since the noise is rpm dependent and you already looked at the transmission as a source. I would start to look at the clutch disc or pressure plate assembly.

Please keep in mind that I'm just tossing this out as a suggestion, there's no way I can say for sure.

There are about 104000 miles on the stock tranny and clutch. The noise is mainly when its just started and cold. It seems to sound somewhat like a slipping belt, but not as high pitched. Could this be the infamous 4th gen tranny bearing shin thing?? Thanks again for the help.

Thats a lot of miles for the clutch but no the tranny. Does it show signs of wearing out?

It hasnt showed signs of slipping at all yet. Still grabs pretty hard in all gears. Ive done the drive at 50mph in 5th and floor it, no slipping at all. Nissan checked it out and said the miles were high, but didnt see anything wrong. Have i maybe missed something with the clutch???

Could it just be the release bearing getting old and spinning against the clutch fork? Does the noise go away if you just apply a slight amount of pressure to the clutch?

If the noise occurs when the clutch is depressed, this is what usually indicates the throwout bearing. You very well could be developing the "infamous" bearing issue. If it only occurs when cold, I would just keep driving it until it becomes more noticeable, and then fix it.
