what happens when you hit the rev limiter?

I was doing a burnout for 10sec w/the gas all the way down. The needle didn't bounce, it just stayed a few mm above redline. No problems.
And today, i was pulling into the freeway in 2nd gear, hit redline for 1 sec, but didn't feel the same jerk you get when you hit the 118mph speed limiter (yeah, did that one a few times too!)

Just sharing my experience. anybody else hit redline for more than 1sec? any problems?

Re: what happens when you hit the rev limiter?
when you hit the limiter it just bounces off...and if you keep on the gas, it keeps bouncing off the limiter, while going at the same speed.
when you are at 118mph you should not hit a limiter, your car should go a lot faster than that, something is wrong with your car if it cut off at that speed. anyways, when your car has a governor in it (some max's do, some don't) your fuel gets cut off, not bouncing off the limiter so it would feel a bit different.

I have a 1997 GXE 5sp...Pretty darn sure there's a speed limiter that's around 118 (hit it about once a week...yeah, I like driving fast!) And when I hit 118, it feels like I hit a wall and the car decelerates as if there was no gas...down to about 110, and then it accelerates back to 118 (next time I will note what rpm I hit the speed limiter)

When I hit the rev limiter, the needle doesn't bounce. It stays tacked to it's position. How does the ecu limit the rpm?

There is an easy fix for this problem and what the ecu is doing is cutting off your fuel so that you cannot accelerate anymore.

hmmm...thats weird
i thought all 5spds didn't have a governor, i guess i was wrong.
well my 99 5spd doesn't have a governor for sure, and goes quite a bit past that, however i haven't hit the top speed yet cause i don't drive on the highway during daily driving so i don't get a chance, but i have went past 118mph before.

I think you can hang out in the redline for a while. I have a 5spd and when I burnout, mine hits redline and stays there. It doesn't bounce. I try to continue into 2nd but my clutch is no good

I know for a fact mine doesn't have a speed limiter. Its a 95 SE, and I have hit 137 in it. There were 2 other people in it so it wouldn't go much more. The only performance mod I've done is a Pop Charger. I think i can hit 140 if the car was empty.

My friend has a 1997 GXE 5spd and, he has taken his car above 120 MPH with no problem.

burning out is a little different, cause your car isn't really going that fast, when the tires catch, the rpms drop.
try it without burning out, or try it in second gear, it will bounce off the rev limiter.

I have only ever hit it once in my car... I hit redline manually shifting my auto and it about bounced my head off the steering wheel a couple times.

Couldn't say for top speed... never went past 127 or so...

I hit the rev limiter once on my automagic, going from 1>2 while manual shifting, it's basically bouncy-bouncy ....

Since MEVi, I have done it three or four times. The only way to describe it is that it feels like the gas cuts for a second and the first time it happened I thought I broke my car......

It is at WOT then blub blub blub...

look for search for brianv ecu mod.......all it takes is a simple snip of a wire and you dont got a limiter anymore

The 97 GXE's are said to have a speed limiter at 118-120. I am pretty sure that is the only year and model that has the lower speed limiter.
I have a 95 SE 5-speed and I have hit 130 at 5600 RPM. I am guessing that I would be at about 135mph at redline if I had the room to keep going. 135mph is pretty damn fast though.
gotta listen for that radar detector too

Concerned
Im kind of concerned, i got a 97 SE 5spd a week back and was testing it out and hit some sort of limited at 118 in 4th...i was told SEs dont have limiters...it could have been the rev limiter as i wasnt staring at the tach but seems odd it was at 118. Whats going on here? Im positive its SE by the 5spd, loaded, spoiler, wheels, steering wheel, gauges, etc....thanks!

sounds like you have a GXE to me if you hit the speed limiter at 118

Very Concerned
How can I have a GXE? Sunroof, 5spd, leather, Bose, white gauges, perforated wheel, rims, spoiler...how is this a GXE? Can 4th go beyond 118? Whats going on!? If its a GXE, i need to return it because they sold me it illegally as an SE! I dont see how it could possibly be an SE. The VIN says its an SE, I also just got the altranator redone and youd think theyd notice if it was a GXE! AH!!

Bad Newbies
Search Search Search.
All 4th gen maxima's that are not SE's or don't have the C&C package have a speed limiter. This means that most GLE's don't because most of them have the C&C package. This also means that it is possible to have a GXE with no limiter, as it was possible to purchase them with the C&C package, but many of them do. And yes, it is a fuel based govenor.

As far as the rev limiter, I gather it works like most other rev limiters, and should be bouncy. Why yours just stayed in one spot, it odd I suppose. It could be that you approached it so slow, that there really was no bounce. Most people feel the bounce running the quarter or something where they HIT redline.

Is 120 in 4th a reasonable limit? I know i was near redline...

You were in 4th gear thats why. In my car in 4th I get to only around 120... so remember to shift next time.

Thats what I thought, as soon as it happened, i backed off cuz it scared me. I dont like anything unexpected at that speed. Will be a while before i can do it again too...road must be clear as hell and straight!

Well, I held the rpm straight up (4000rpm?) and sidestepped the clutch. When the tires started squeeling, I floored it. So I don't think it was a problem w/approaching redline too slowly. It was seriously pinned just above the redline mark and engine still sounded strong. How strange

Yeah, when I hit 118mph, I was in 5th gear. I don't think 4th goes that high, but I don't have my FSM on me right now

Last night, I shifted to 5th and still had the cutoff at 117-8. I thought this was an SE? Can the dealer check if its a GXE ECU for me or something like that? As I said before, it has all the SE options (spoiler, 5spd, wheels, gauges, steering wheel, all that fun stuff).what is going on? I just replaced my knock sensor and have no codes!
