99se First and Hopefully last Problem.

I own a 99se I bought the car from my uncle about 3 months ago at 27K miles, now the car has 30K. The car has no mods done to it at all totally stock, today I went to start the car and the Service Engine Soon light came on, I also own a ford exploder so I’m pretty use to this happening but with the ford I just turn the car of and it goes away or worse case scenario disconnect the battery and it fixes its self then again its got 112K on it. Anyway I tried the turning the car off and back on and the light came back on I haven’t discounted the battery yet and was hoping I wouldn’t have to.
Well the cars only has 30K on it so I can’t believe there could be any problem already. I bought the car hoping I wouldn’t have to deal with these little things like with my ford and Chevy. Well anyway any ideas on what this could be (I used the search feature and found all kind of ideas but was hopeful maybe someone could relate to this problem) the car seems to be running fine, I live in central NJ so the local dealer is Pine Belt Nissan. I might just bring it to them and get raped if I cant fix it. I hope its nothing big I’m really happy with the car up to now.
Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks
Chuck

I'm guessing its one of the O2 sensors. Use the computer to check your codes. Is the car still under warranty? If so they'll take care of it.

Ditto what others said - probably a bad Oxygen sensor. These were chronically failing on many 4th Gens and TSB's were issued. If that's the problem, it's likely a warranty covered repair.

Pull codes from the ECU & let us know what you come up with.

Btw, you almost made me fall out of my chair spewing milk from my nose!

"Last problem" with a car? ANY car? Does such a thing exist?! Oh, should we all be so lucky! Most Maxima's serve their owners well if fed & cared for properly, but even a Maxima will dissapoint you every now and then if you set the bar that high.

It's okay though - you've got one of the best damned resources and most knowledgeable crew of Max owners right here at your fingertips!

Good luck.

tell me about and the best ones are those ghost problems that tend to go away then you take in to get it fixed but choose to make an apperance at the worst times(Griding noise while i pull up to a group of people and get one of those looks) oh boy i hate those

Thanks for the quick replies I took off the plastic panel to expose the Diagnostic Test Mode Selector, as show on http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecu.html . but I noticed on mine it says Idler-Speed Control were the one it the picture says Self Diagnostic. I am assuming that this is the same but wanted to check before I try it.
Thanks again

Hmmm. . . I dunno about that one, as I'm a '95-er. Anyone out there with a '99 familiar with the ECU? -A little help here?
