Short Shifter....Is it worth it?

One of my plans was to put a short shifter on my future Max since i think that stock is way to long. Is it really worth the time, the money, and the problems that it might cause? Will it improve 1/4 runs?

Alot of that gets right down to how well you drive. Do you miss shifts often? If so you might not want to get a short throw shifter. Do hundrenths of a second matter to you in the 1/4? If so it is probally worth it.

i love the difference in shifting feel - and for $60 you can't go wrong.

its worth it. the feeling of a stock shifter is like rowing a boat, even reducing the throw a little bit makes driving 5 spd max even fun. $60 and someplaces even for less plus you its pretty easy to install, I recommend it.

"rowing a boat" interesting.......

So what brand would you recommend, and how low should i go for it to still be comfortable and easy enough to drive for a newbie?

I say try something like a spherical miata **** first. I always thought I wanted a STS in my Integra...but a spherical **** where the thread came up through the top of the **** did shorten the ****'s height, and more importantly, put the palm of my hand at the actual top of the lever and not floating 3-4" above it...this increase in feel was all I needed.

Remember all Miata ***** have the same thread length as on our maximas. So all those aftermarket ***** avail for the miata are game without using a janky universal allen screw mount.

the shift **** doesn't really have any the throw. The throw is the space between each shift gates. you'll still have the same length on your shifter, what a sts does is that it adjusts the ball or the pivot point higher on the shifter so theres less movement. I have a razo know and a momo ****, I like the razo more cuz it fit well compare to the momo which need to 3 screws to hold it which always seems to come loose.

I have the OBX short shifter. The reason I bought it was because, at the time, there was like a 4 month waiting period on the Pacesetter. Stillen was just too overpriced. The OBX is around stock height so I cut about 2 inches off of the shifter and it's at a really comfortable height for me. It is topped off with a Momo shift ****. I would have bought Pacesetter if their availability was greater when I was looking. It is not expensive and is adjustable. The OBX was around $95 or $100.

The STS is definitely a plus. With it, I don't have to worry about accidentally hitting the front passenger in the leg when shifting to 5th.

BUT if that passenger is a girl, then it's all good

i went onto the custom maxima web site and looked at pics of the pacesetter. it said it was easy to instal, but then showed pics of the underside of the car with the cat removed. do you have to get under the car and remove the cat in order to instal this thing, because that doesnt seem that easy. or maybe i just suck.

I was looking at short throws the other day and I'm interested in asking for one for x-mas. I was probably gonna get the Pacesetter one from Custommaxima.com but then i found this: http://shop.store.yahoo.com/spiderac...s/pacshif.html I was wondering if this is the same shifter or not. The pics dont match up but did Pacesetter actually make two different STS for the maxima? It also says for 95-96 Maxima. Would that fit a 97-99?

I got a STS in my car, came with it when I bought it. This is my first stick car, so it was really...really hard for me to drive it at first. It's only been a month since I been drivin stick, so i still suck. I think mine was put in wrong though, I have to kind of angle it when I shift. Maybe I just suck. If you a newbie, I don't suggest it.

that is the pacesetter shifter, you can get it for the same price at www.southwestautoworks.com . it should fit 95-99 maximas.

yes, you must get under the car and take off the cat to install it. trust me, with a jack, jackstands, and some real basic tools you can do it. I never did anything mechanical on my car (except change filters, etc.) and I put in my y-pipe and STS. by far the hardest part is the rusted cat bolts.

I installed mine without removing the cat. All you have to do is take off the heatshield, and work around the cat.

It's worth it in my opinion. Installed mine (pacesetter)like two months ago, and so far I am happy with it. Shifting is a little tight but precise.

i did mine without taking the cat loose. if you have a set of universal pivots and extensions its not a problem at all.

I read little about the B&M shifter for the Maxima, but that's what I had installed recently. B&M is a company with a long standing reputation for quality products and is an excellent alternative to the Pacesetter and the Stillen shifter. I bought if through a local speed shop for $170.00. I've seen it on line for 20-30 bucks cheaper.

I've had my Maxima for 6 years now and the short shifter should have been one of my first mods, not one of the last! The throws on the stock shifter are way too long for my tastes. I feel like I'm driving a sports car now. Highly recommended.

What do you guys think about cutting the stock shifter? Does this mod stand between the real STS and the stock? And is it possible to put threads after cutting? anyone with this experience. i could only find one post on this matter.

i agree the B&M is the best so far... none of the problems like the other ones have... leave it to a quality company like them to make a good one... the price is a bit steep but well worth it IMO
