Intake manifold/valve/chamber cleaners
Intake manifold/valve/chamber cleaners
With all the talk of cold weather stalling I thought I would share this. The usual fixes didn't help my max (plugs, filter, TB cleaning, injector cleaner), so i went one step further. I already used carb cleaner to remove the protective coating from my throttle body so i figured i couldn't do any more damage. I first used this product in the past in my 93 Ford Ranger, that had severe "pinging" problems...the improvements were astounding and I have been a believer ever since. Its a Motorcraft product called "Carburetor Tune Up". Though my Max didn't have problems with pinging, the intake manifold was filthy, and I am sure the valves/chambers were no better. Other manufacturers (Seafoam, 3M etc..) make stuff like this...but no stores carry any of it, so I went back to the ford dealer...its around $6-7/can i think
the stuff comes in a 16 ounce can. A mechanic friend on mine at the ford dealer gave me some modified instructions.....Have the car all warmed up...perhaps a 5-10 minute drive. Find a vacuum line just down stream of the TB, so you have good suction. adapt a piece of hose long enough to reach into the bottom of the can....start the car, let it suck till it stalls, take the hose out of the can, there should be about half of it left. Shut the ignition off and let it sit for 15 minutes to 1/2 hour. it will start hard...really hard....let the engine suck the remainder of the can's contents in slowly....just barely keeping it running. all the while it will be fogging your entire neighborhood. as soon as the can is finished, hook the hose back up (or plug it) and take the car out for a good beating, going all the way to red line repeatedly until the smoking stops....it will go like hell till all this stuff burns out.
It can take some toll on plugs, so i reinstalled the old ones I had replaced earlier. I noted the same results as I have in the past...better engine power. In the case of my ranger, it would ping so bad I couldn't pull a 2 place snowmobile trailer more than 65 on a level grade....after a cleaning with this even my friends noticed how much better it pulled without having to downshift...the max has show the same...(no i don't tow anything with it)
for what its worth....
