Have you done any of the following yet??

1. check your ECU for any codes
2. clean the TB
3. make sure none of the sensors are loose or disconnected
4. check your coil packs
5. a tune up

I'm gonna go with a NO to that.. at least not in my car.

I just bought a 97 GXE with about 80K on it and it does the same thing. Mine only does it for about a half second though. Not 2-3 seconds. I haven't done anything to check it yet. By the way. Mine is a 5spd too . Surely that wouldn't have anything to do with it?

Try using a nissan oil filter. A cheap oil filter will not
have a good back pressure valve and oil will drain out of filter .
I worked at a nissan dealer saw it alot.

My Car I think does the same thing. It has a lot of problems starting some times when it does what I refer to it makes a lot of aggressive bangs and it scares me. hehe. I have replaced the starter motor only about 5,000 miles ago. It normally takes a couple of tries in order to start my car. HELP!

Mine does that grinding sound also.. but i had noticed that it only does it when the weather is cold outside. Also, last week went to change my starter for a rebuilt(which happenned to be a defect). The rebuilt one did that noise right away. So it comfirms that the noise has to do with the starter and the flywheel. I'm gonna get a new starter in by monday. I'll let u know if this fixes the grinding noise at startup.

Sounds like a timing chain tensioner problem to me. I remember coming across a bulletin at work (I work at a Nissan dealer) and it had information pertaining to that sound you guys are describing. The cause is a bad timing chain tensioner and there are a few parts that need to be replaced. This costs a pretty penny if your getting it done by a dealer (7.5 hr job @ $85/hr) not to mention the cost of parts. But here's the list of things you'll need:

PN DESC.
13070-31U03 Tensioner, timing chain
13091-2Y001 Timing chain slack guide
13079-31U00 Gasket, tensioner, timing
15208-9E000 Oil filter

As soon as I can get to a scanner I can post the Service Bulletin with all the info for fixing it. Hope this helps solve some of your rattling problems. By the way, I have that noise also in cold start-up but have no case to fix it; ain't the holidays grand.

i just did the timing chain, tensioners, guides on my 95 GLE (162k) I also did the water pump since I was right there anyway. You will also need the valve cover gaskets, intake gasket. Clean the TB since you are already there also. This is a huge job so be prepared to get ****ed off.

Would've agreed with you for 4-5 days after changing to the OEM filter on my '94 w/150,000miles. Then the same problem resumed. Oil brand and viscosity has some influence on the problem but can't completely stop it.

My engine knocks for 1/2 to 1 second on the first start in the morning. Sometimes it's almost not there at all. Temp is constant in an underground parking garage.

A better solution would've been to design the block for a normally oriented filter......i.e., with the screw-in end at the top. Then I wouldn't have to depend on a cheap plastic baffle in the filter to act as a wanna-be check valve.

My experience with anti-drainback filters is mixed.......OEM filter was OK for a few days, maybe a week........aftermarket filters are variable, but none works for long. I think the whole concept of an upside-down filter is stupid ..........bet it's a compromise to save $$$$$ for car companies.

Of course, as long as the motor isn't left for more than a few hours, the oil stays in the filter, but overnight.......you can count on knockin' rods in the morning on first startup of the day.

When you worked at the dealership, did you ever trace the problem to the pressure-limiting valve that's built into the oil pump? If this valve dies, it just might let system pressure get low, don't you think?

I think it'd be interesting to know how many with the knocking while starting are using Fram oil filters? Mine did it with a Fram filter about 20,000 miles ago. Have used OEM (the older ***-9E000? one), Bosch, and STP since, and the noise has not returned. Fram has gotten a bad rep for the anti-drainback valve construction. More info in the fluids forum.
Isn't the timing chain tensioner problem only for 95-96's? I thought it was fixed for later years.
