If you live in a city like Seattle with hills and constant stops for people crossing the street without looking and red/green lights, along with a mess of stop signs... then I think you would go crazy driving a manual. It would be constant shifting and did I mention CONSTANT shifting?

But if you travel mostly out on highways and all that, then a manual is the way to go

Just bought a 5spd, I had 2 auto's (maxima's) 97 and 95. I knew I wanted to by another max, but I said that it would have to be a 5spd no matter what. The auto is fine, but that's it just fine. I never really had a rewarding drive from the auto max's. City or highway driving in the 5spd max is just more rewarding. I actually get in the max an look for to row the gears, I don't remember having that feeling with the auto's that I had before. I'm 110% happy with my 5 spd. NO REGRETS.

the 5spd is def the way to go. while yeah it's annoying in traffic sometimes, but it makes the drive to the supermarket a lot more exciting than what it would be in an auto.

I guess it all depends on how you expect to use the car. I personally have an auto Gen 4. Bought it from a 80 year old Indian (India) doctor. I like it a lot. Its very comfortable on the highway, secondary or city driving. I click off the over drive button and it can get pretty snappy, But a standard transmission would give a much higher level of control, BUT THIS CAN BE GOOD OR BAD.

I have had them both, a 95 GXE auto, and now a 98 SE 5 sp. I much prefer the 5 sp, as I like to be involved and make the decisions on which gear to use.

Automatic Maxima

Hey guys. I have a 1997 Nissan Maxima with 394k miles with the original motor still in it. It is an automatic and I love the car. I could not ask for anything less. I had to replace the transmission at 338k miles and thats good they usually go at about 150-200k. I am presently having the motor rehauled. It is leaking alot of oil and one of the valves bent. But other then that I LOVE MY MAXIMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought an auto 97 max, but converted it cause I get real bored driving an auto. I do kind of miss the auto cause I get stuck in traffic and the highway miles suck compared to a manual. Also, you have to be pretty talented to drive stick and hold your girls hand while driving, fun stuff.

Good luck with your purchase.

I regret getting my auto Max, but it's saved me money, no speeding or shenanigans of any sort, no tickets no court dates! Seriously, I want a 5sp again!

Slushbox? Ive seen many 5spds get owne by my at because they cant shift properly or fast enough. I think u should rethink calling a max a slushbox... maybe ur the slush in ur box?

a 5spd is just to much work for everyday driving, i'd rather relaxs and use a finger and a foot to get where i'm going. 5speeder's just love it for now, believe they will change that tune in a few years of stripping gears and blowing clutches

I love driving a manual because it gives you more control, especially in the snow!! Before my Maxima, I drove a 89 Old Delta 88 and it sucked not being able to down shift when coming to a stop, had to entirely depend on the brakes. Wisconsin weather, or any place that gets snow, in the winter, almost requires a manual...IMHO....I feel much safer driving a manual. You're more focused on driving than answering a cell phone, eating, or any other tendancy which is hazardous while driving.

I really can't stand people who are driving while on the phone. I cannot count how many times I have almost been side-swiped by these a--holes.

IMO.....a manual transmission is safer than an auto any day

may i remind that currently the fastest maxima is an auto.

dont believe me ask Jime

If you drive an auto.. you know its happened to you too. You are going to pass someone but you have to let off the gas for a second. Then when you smash the gas again... the slushbox takes like 4 seconds to decide it needs to downshift. This leaves you out in the passing lane.. bogged down in 4th gear like a moron.

Manual FTW. When my slushbox kicks the bucket a manual is being put in.
