Anyone replaced their water pump yet and how much did it set you back?
The mechanic said that it is either that or the head is leaking, either way its going to be alot of dough. I've heard of people buying new engines or at least engines with low mileage. Where can I get info on this? Thanks

water pump?

Wow....I have never heard of that going out on a 4th gen! I think I would get another opinion. Anyway, you can get an engine out of a local import junk yard or even off of EBAY from time to time.

It's not from the head though.

BARS LEAK!

Maybe try some BARS LEAK Miracle additive and see what happens. On an old Grand Am I had that ol' Quad Four was leaking and that stuff sealed it right up!

You should not be thinking about buying a replacement engine unless yours is seriously damaged. Replacing a leaky water pump or even a blown head gasket is much less costly than an entire engine. Is there more to the story than you have already told?

WATER PUMP

ahhh Daniel B. Martin strikes, I listen This guy is a fountain of knowledge. He's the closest thing to a computer that we have on MAXIMA.ORG.

Honestly, I agree....you shouldn't replace the engine b/c of a water pump leak. How many miles are on the engine? Have you had other problems with it that would be cost prohibitive to fix?

Thanks Daniel,

It's actually in the shop right now as we speak getting a new water pump and timing chains. I have 168,000 miles on the engine and think that it is going to blow up on me soon because of the supercharger... I wanted to see if I could find a VQ with less miles and maybe even a VSLD transmission along with it. I dont plan on selling the car, and I do take really good care of my exterior and interior. I get props about the looks all the time. My goal is to have one of te fastest 4th Gen around. I think the supercharger is wearing in on all those miles that I have and I think that is why my water pump went kapoop.

A supercharger puts additional strain on some engine parts but not all. The supercharger increases combustion chamber pressure and this imposes greater demands on the pistons, rings, connecting rods, and bearings. However it does not increase the load on engine accessories such as the water pump, power steering pump, alternator, and air conditioning compressor. 168K miles might wear out a water pump on a completely stock engine.
