Battery died, need replacement...Suggestions :)

Hey guys,

I noticed my car won't start when it's cold out, i really have to have my foot on the pedal to start it, therefore i am in need of a new battery. now i do have a fairly advanced stereo system running off it, however I would need the best battery suited for my cold climate here in Canada. I was looking at an optima yellow top but i read the red top was best for starting. Maybe you guys have other suggestions, thanks

hey, im in canada as well, toronto to be specific...
im running an optima yellow top, and it does the job pretty well.
if you have a stereo system, spend the extra bit and go with the yellow top, it has the deep cycling crap, which is apparantly good for aftermarket electronics.

do you have any idea what you are talking about???

deep cycle batts are good if you constantly run your battery real low.

http://www.odysseybatteries.com/ has some GREAT batteries for all uses, including deep cycle. it is rumored that they make batteries for stinger.

I just bought a new one. AC Delco. 6 year warranty, and can be replaced anywhere as long as you have the receipt. All for about 80$.

How do you figure you need a new battery because you have to press
the gas to start the car, sounds like your engine has problems, not
the battery. Does it have trouble cranking the engine over?

I got a die hard in mine, seems to do the trick, I'm not sure about all those special batteries, I never used em b4, seems the die hard gold would be good for the cold weather.

Yeah... pressing the gas? You dont have a carburetor to fill witt gas, its fuel injected. Unless, it starts to die and then you need to give it gas.. I had that problem once.. one of the hoses off my intake was loose so at idle it was not real smooth and was reallly low. So maybe check that..

I just cashed in on this deal....I don't have any heavy load on my electrical system other than some real cold winter starts, or when the car sits for a week or two.

Whatever battery you put in your car, make sure you have at least 1/2 farad Capacitor in there for your stereo. Hell, I'm thinking about getting one just so my headlights don't dim when I step on the brake.

I dont think that the battery is your problem...a battery would only be needed if your car doesnt turn over...giving it gas to start has nothing to do with the battery.

Not exactly true. If the starter keeps cranking at the same pace then it's not the battery. If tries to crank and then progressivly gets slower and slower (quickly), then it's most likely the battery.

My battery died today (7-year old OEM battery). It tried to crank and then it was done. Starting had been hard ever since the temps dropped. I went to Sears and got a Die Hard "Silver" ($69, 630 cold cranking amps) and it fits the factory battery sleeve nicely. I hate the looks of all these colored batteries. I want everything to look factory. As for battery performance, the car starts instantly.

The Die Hard Gold did not fit very nicely in the battery sleeve.
When it gets warmer out, I need to take a utility knife to the sleeve.

Re: Battery died, need replacement...Suggestions :)

I don't have any high power stereo systems (just factory Bose) so Costco's battery is working for me. I installed a new one when I bought my car in Oct 2000, and it works great for me so far. BTW, I live in Vancouver, B.C.

You may want to look into other possible causes, like fuel filter, dirty TB...

Not your battery

Hey,

I have the same problem too. My car won't start unless I use the gas pedal in cold weather after sitting overnight. I had my battery tested and it's fine. One of my friends mentioned to me to have my throttle body clean. I had it done and still have the same problem. I think the problem is the spark plugs. I going to have a tune up and change everything from spark plugs, fuel filter, pcv valve, air filter, etc. Give that a try. I will let you know how my car turn out after the tune up.
