tranny cooler question

I just ordered a Tranny cooler for my vb mod, i was wondering where exactly to put it, because wouldn't putting it in front of the radiator prevent the radiator from working correctly?

The instructions for my tranny cooler recommend you place it in front of the radiator as it also uses cold air blowing on it to cool the tranny fluid. If there was an alternate location to place it to get it in front of the air flow, many would be doing it probably.

Our cars require a small cooler due to the weight of our cars.

Make sense?

They generally are small in size and have hardware designed to fit on the front of the radiator. They will block very little air flow.

The one we needed required some brass fittings to complete the install. I got the polished B&M tranny cooler. Not sure of the part number but I have a picture of it on my home page.

The cooler over the radiator wont affect anything because the fins let air through.

Yes that will fit just fine.

On a side note, these tranny coolers work great! I used a infrared temperature gun on my tranny cooler after some spirited driving. There was a temp difference of ~20 degrees between the inlet and outlet side.

You should be fine. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. The installation is pretty quick and painless. Chances are, they do include an installation kit with it.

That was the hard part with the polished tranny cooler, it did not include install stuff....made it more of a challenge

I have the B&M for 24,000GVW and it works flawlessly even in subzero temps.

Nice~
Dont forget to add some more tranny fluid after you're done.

I'm due for a tranny flush. I'm thinking if I should go ahead and install a tranny cooler too. That way, while the tranny is being flushed, everything will circulate out of the tranny cooler too and I will end up with the right amount of fluid.

Well it works all the time unless you have a B&M which you do. In this case when the fluid is already cold it allows it to go straight through, like a bypass valve in a way. You will need to add more fluid to make up for the mass that will be acounted for in the cooler and hoses themselves.Answered your two questions.....anything else?

Sincerly-the guy who told you to get the bigger one.

Same fluid thats in your tranny now....and you have to have power in order to blow a tranny like I did.

Take Care

The transmission cooler actually mounts on the AC condensor, not the radiator (although I guess you could sandwhich it in between the radiator and the condensor, but why would you).

You need to add a little more fluid to make up for the volume of the transmission cooler (which is essentially a tank of fluid with fins for cooling).

I have the smaller B&M cooler and its has been excellent. Been using it for two years now, no problems at all.

You'll know its not working when your transmission will shift hard from overcooling.

how difficult is it to install one?

I'm running out of ideas for my car!!! ...actually, I'm debating a
road trip, and figure this would be some good insurance!!! I'm off
to get a flush soon, so, I was thinking I could install this before
I go.

So, how hard is this install?

thanks,
FLO_BOY

woah..........wait, i don't understand the way you put that, so it'll shift nicer from the cooler, and if the cooler isn't working it won't shift as hard? correct?

I do not recommend mounting it on the condenser. While you may not have had any problems, I know several people who had to relace the condenser as a result of mounting it there.

Not trying to direct anyone how to do things, just trying to pass on some experience.

The install is pretty easy. You remove a stock hose and place the coller in series with the transmission outlet on the radiator.

Tranny ----> hose to radiator-------> outlet on radiator to one side of the cooler (hose)-----. other side of the cooler to the return on the transmission.

Use hose clamps on all connections preferably a fuel line clamp or something similar. I had a tranny fluid leak from using the wrong clamps.

Also, I did my flush when I installed the cooler.

Most of the B & m kits will include all of the mounting hardware as well as a special kit to attach to the radiator. Do not use zip ties to attach to the radiator as you will bend up your fins.

Point taken. The B&M instructions say to mount it on the condensor for the most effective cooling. It also shows directions to mount it in between the condensor and radiator, but it would be a very tight squeeze if you put it in there. I pretty much followed the instructions from Greg's excellent transmission cooler writeup:

Can you give details of what problems people had? Mounting on the condensor is a pretty common practice, and I'm very surprised it caused problems. Maybe they didn't use the vibration isolation material between the tranny cooler and the condensor? Just a guess.

If the transmission fluid is too cool in normal operating comditions, the transmission will not shift smoothly. Don't worry with the B&M you're not going to have to worry about that because of the cutoff valve that's built into it.
