Have the same problem, and I'm guessing it only happens when its cold out...There is a good read and guide on how to re-grease your starter at www.motorvate.ca ....should take a look, very helpful site.

maybe
Dont worry theres two things, maybe is the starter or maybe is the oil sensors of the engine, when the weather is very coold the sensors trying to get oil to the engine(upper side) and thats the sound that you hear....but is normal, after the engine is warm, the sound fo off

Yeah me and my dad have the same problem. His is a little more frequent, (the whirling sound when you start it up) but it only happens when it's cold. I don't worry about it that much, maybe ill check out the starter an stuff. Also, is 4 quarts enough oil? Some say 4, 4.5, manual says 4.25 i tink. thanks.

I too have the same noise upon startup. It kind sounds like a whizzing or windup sound under the hood. Listen to all these people who have replied because it is more than likely that the grease or lubrication inside the started has dried up. There are several DIY sites that show you how to perform this. I'm going to wait on regreasing my starter this week because of the fact that it is soooooo cold right now I'm not at my personal computer right now so I don't have the link. Reply back to this thread if you can't find the site and I will post the link. Good Luck! ~Frank
