If you have a laptop, pick up the ODB-2 cable and software at http://obd-2.com/ I have it and it works well on my 1995 Maxima SE, and it is cheaper too $122.

I never used an OBD2 device and I dontknow much about it. But if there are adjustable parameters in the ECU (like engine timing), can this software adjust it?

Some of the items you can moniter are:
-engine coolant temp
-throttle position
-Fuel trim (short term & long term per bank. (there are 2 banks))
-calculated engine load
-mass air flow in pounds per minute
-vechile speed
-engine RPM
-O2 sensor voltage (all three)
-and a few more that I can not remember....
Take Care.
