How long do OEM O2 sensors last on average?
How long do OEM O2 sensors last on average?
My 99 SE has had the service engine light on for two months with no codes stores on the computer. Would a bad O2 trigger a code? I'm trying to limit what the problem could be. All the ignition wires were tested, replaced one bad coil 3 months ago. Car engine still drives very strong still. Gas mileage is a little less, but its been very cold in N.E. I only have 50k miles on car.
Any ideas?

There are three o2 sensors I believe. Any one could trigger a code.
Go to AutoZone and they'll pull the diagnostic codes for free from your car.
I've got a 98SE and it blew two O2 sensors at about 80k. 50k seems a little low but certainly possible...
If it is the O2 sensor, just reset it and see if it comes back. My Toyota truck throws a bad O2 code about once a year. I just reset it and never see it again for 12mos or so....
FWIW my max gets about 2-4mpg less in the cold months probably due to the reformulated gas they used here in winter.

the Maxima, and most new cars use a heated O2 sensor (they will have three wires)....they are good for 100K on average. The old O2 sensors that are not heated should be replaced every 40K. my current max threw a code at 98K...i just replaced it. oxygensensors.com or expressautoparts.com thepartsbin.com....bosch is OEM.
don't panic the first time you get an O2 sensor code....2nd and third time...yes..especially if the time between codes is decreasing.
winter mileage...I second that..."winter gas" will impact your milage....and the air is denser from the cold, so the computer is likely dumping a little more fuel in....and the warm up period is also longer, which is also a "rich fuel" condition.

I've never replaced an o2 sensor in any car I've ever owned. My last car had 170,000 miles on it. The only sensor that failed on me in that car was a cam sensor.
The mystery I have is the service engine light is on (for 2 months), but no trouble codes come up when you hook it to an OBD-II scanner. I hate to bring it in to Nissan to have them tell me there are no codes stored and then have them take $75.00.
Anyone else have light on with no codes present?

I had the rear one replaced by Nissan (at their cost) along with some Emission Recall work at around 40,000 miles.
No other problems with Oxygen Sensors of any kind. Max now has 200,545 miles.
