Transmission Oil Leak

'96 with 163,000 miles, runs beautiful, never a problem. Changed tranny oil, new screen and gasket, and now see 2-3 drops of pink, clean ATF in the snow under the car every time it is moved. All bolts are tightened to spec. Cooler lines are clean. Any ideas where it is coming from?

Nissan recommends replacing tranny pan bolts after removing. The bolts are self sealing. I believe Permatex number 2 (non hardening) would work as well. That is what I plan on doing.

Funny this was brought up, I was working at the shop the other day and my boss replaced the tranny gasket and filter for a customer like 3 weeks ago and then 2 weeks later she came back with her car saying that it's leaking "red fluid". So we put it on the lift and we saw the oil coming out of the bolts, so we called the Nissan and she went to pick them up replaced them and she hasn't come back and she said she would keep an eye on it. THe car was a 1997 Maxima with 156,000 miles. This could be your problem.

Thanks, guyz. It's off to the Nissan dealer for new bolts, new gasket, and a new tube of Permatex.

Now thats why! I never dropped my tranny pan but it seems like theres a slow leak around it. How much are these bolts running for at the dealership?

I've only had my Maxima for about a month (95 SE, 5spd, 147,000 mi). 2 weeks ago I had my cv driveshafts replaced and now the tranny is leaking profusely! It looks to be coming from the top and is wet all down the center of the tranny. I tried adding Bars stop leak for manual trannies, but it has actually gotten MUCH worse since then. Not even sure if it was leaking before the driveshafts or not. Any ideas?

Update, the car has 230,000 on the clock and runs absolutely beautiful. My son bought it from me 5 years ago, he has had it to 135 with more pedal to go. What a gem.

I think I paid about $.75 each for them. The weird thing was, they came in 2 plastic packages. I used them all and then counted--21! There must have been 11 in each package, but I didn't think I lost any. ..

There are only 21.

Funny story. I just did mine this past Sunday. I did not replace the old bolts, I just reused the old ones. But when torquing the last bolt, i must have not been paying attention and the ratchet went past the "click" unbeknownst to me, and I would up snapping the bolt head off . . . it must be a pretty weak bolt because it wasn't even really tight, I was beside myself when I did it. Anyway, so I decided to try to drill out the part stuck in the housing and take it out with an easy out (even though I am about 0-15 in trying to drill out snapped bolts). Obviously I screwed up, and I drilled slightly off center. The easy out didn't work, so I had to do something. Having only standard taps, I tapped out a 12-24 thread into it, half into the bolt, half into the housing, and put in 1 standard bolt. I thought I was screwed. But so far, 100 miles and no leaks . . . for now.

ON a related note . . . before this weekend, my tranny fluid wasn't replaced for about 60,000 miles. So it was long overdue. I swear it made a huge, noticeable difference. Before, the car used to clunk into gear from Park, now it shifts out of Park much smoother. Also, the gear change from 1st to 2nd was a bit rough, now its much smoother, and the car seems to have a bit more torque in first gear than it used to. It used to seem like it was dragging a bit. Is this legit, or is it all in my head?

i heard that it's bad to change tranny fluid on older cars because aged tranny fluid has some griping material thats needed for gear change. prior to knowing this, i changed my 97 gle tranny fluid at 104k miles and now, the car seems to hesitate and stutter a little bit just when it hits 4th gear @ 40 mph between 1.2k-1.8k rpms. ive been driving with that problem and now have 107k. is it true that you shouldnt change the fluid after a while?

Auto-RX

Before you do anything else do an Auto-Rx treatment. The only snakeoil that actually works. Cleans crap off the seals and gets rid of left over junk from the clutches rubbing for miles and miles. Google it for the website and follow directions. No quarantee (it is not my company) but certainly worth a try before the $$$$$ trany rebuild.

I haven't heard that, but it seems completely wrong. EVERY time you shift out of park and/or your car shifts on its own, the clutches and plates rub. The fluid gets tiny metal flakes in there, which actually acts as an abrasive and wears the tranny down little by little. Aside from all the metal on the magnets, there was a dark film on the screen and the bottom of the pan . . . this was all metal. Not good to be in there. This stuff can actually clog up that screen/filter, and restrict flow to the clutch, not giving it enough pressure and causing it to slip a bit, creating more metal. Again, not good. So changing your tranny fluid is definitely necessary. Not doing so just limits its life because the tranny wears more and more every day, and every day, the old fluid in there becomes more and more abrasive.

The negative feedback your car is giving you may be engine related. If it is the tranny, one of your gears may be slipping because you didn't change the fluid enough and its worn. Be thankful you caught it early.
