Yes.
Yes.
I believe the term most people use is Rear Sway Bar (if talking about the back), or RSB for short. IMHO, the front sway bar is good the way it is, other than polyurethane bushings could be added to take out some of the "play". Adding a rear sway bar greatly deminishes body sway, giving a much "tighter" feeling to the car. Also increases oversteer, which is great on these cars that suffer from understeer. It really balances the car handling.
You can find more info and people's reviews by searching for Rear Sway Bar or RSB. This is definitely a worthwhile mod. Too bad Nissan didn't put one there stock, but I guess their marketing people didn't think the Maxima would be modded by younger people, so it's designed mainly for "refined" middle-aged customers (a lot of whom probably could care less about handling).
After having one for about 10 days, I really recommend one. On my '97 SE's stock springs/struts, it makes a world of difference. More bang for the buck when compared to a FSTB (very good mod) and a RSTB (does it really help? Hard to tell). And I've had both on this Maxima for over a year before adding the RSB.

Yes it helps out TREMENDOUSLY. I took mine off for a while in order to figure out some clunking noise from my suspension. When hanging turns or just making slow esses, the rear would sway side to side. I didn't tell my brother, but when riding in my car, he instantly knew that I had taken off the RSB. When I put the RSB back on, it was a hundred times more planted. You will feel it. You will like it. =)

One of the first susp mod anyone should get.
Addco's are inexpensive. But then, it's still over $100.

Re: Re: anti sway bar

Actually, there is a stock RSB on the Maxima. It is located inside the multi-link beam. On the Maxima, and on most cars really, when they come with a stock RSB, it's tuned softly, so they purposely want understeer, b/c in a panic when you brake, the braking correctly recovers from understeer. But braking from oversteer, lookout!

I put an FSTB and RSB on my 98SE, same exact suspension setup as your 97SE. I put them both on at about 36K miles and was very happy with my suspension until about 110K miles, at which point the struts started to wear out. You won't regret either. Get both. They really transform the car to a sure footed sports sedan. The RSB will make you take hi speed corners with new confidence and the FSTB will tighten up the front end and make your steering inputs alot more accurate, especially under high g cornering situations.

Damn, I must sound like an ad from a car mag But it's all true.

PS, there is a Rear Strut Tower Bar, or RSTB. I would advise that your get the FSTB and RSB 1st and foremost, and then if you want even more rear end control (I doubt it), get the RSTB.

I bought my Progress RSB from custommaxima.com for $110 dollars, shipping included in the price. Great mod, I've had it for a few days in my car and the rear feels much tighter now. Get one you will not be dissapointed.

You already have a front sway bar... all you would need to do to that is replace all the bushings for that...

The Maxima has both a front and rear sway bar stock. The front sway bar is easy to recognize, once you seen one, you'll know how to recognize it inside all those front suspension components. The rear sway bar that is stock is very very hard to recognize. In fact, I've seen it and didn't realize what it was on several ocasions. It's the big thick beam INSIDE the multi-link beam. Nissan tuned the stock FSB to be stronger than the stock RSB, therefore the car tends to understeer. By adding an aftermaket RSB, you balance it out.

The ride does get stiffer, mostly b/c of the RSB, but not dramatically so. Still very livable.
