Search Disabled? Wheels Flaking
I was hoping to find an old answer to what has got to be an old question:
My stock 'honeycomb' wheels are peeling on my '95 GLE. Apparently there's some sort of clear-coat on the wheels, and it's coming off. It's not bad (yet), but I doubt that it will get anything but worse.
Any ideas on how to stop this process?
Any ideas on how to remove the entire clear coat--and what to replace it with?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

First, I take no responsibility for what you do with this info. Years ago I had a 280Z that was doing the same thing. I did a cheap fix buy painting them with paint stripper (with them still on the car and tires mounted) It will strip all the clear coat off, (protect the tires with masking tape and old newspaper or plastic) Then I polished them with Aluminum polish to almost chrome like, then used a clear urethane spray can type coating. This is not necessary if you want to stay on top of them and keep them polished. But believe me when I tell you that paint stripper will take that clear coat off PRONTO! Lay it on thick and WAIT don't get impatient, let the chemical work. It may take a couple of times but it will work. I helped it along at times with a drill motor with a wire brush on it. ( got impatient HAHA)
Just a thought, worked for me, beware though....some clear coatings (spray can types) will yellow over time......if you were to do it the right way, you could take the wheels off, dismount the tires, strip the clear coat, and prep them (polish or not. Up to you) and let a pro put on a clear coat for you,
Good Luck
