Carbon Fiber hood...thoughts, ideas

Anybody with a CF hood, please contribute your feedback. Positive, negative, etc? Annoying to use clips? Any noticable performance difference (lighter front end)? Also, please tell me where the best place to find a 4th gen CF hood is. THANKS.

As far as I know they have to be custom made. My friend Y2ksesteve, who has a 5th gen, is getting a custom carbon fiber hood soon. They are more for looks than anything, and I doubt you would notice any difference in the way the car feels. Also, as far as the clips, you better use more than just the clips to hold the hood in place, that way annoying teenagers cant get under your hood.

Quite a bit less. A stock hood is about 50lbs+, a CF hood just a couple, i.e. single digits.

Look at what kind of car you have. It's a 3300+ pound car. Do you really think that 50 pounds gone is going to make a difference? You all sound like Honda drivers right now

dental stud, if your interested in the CF hood, talk to AnGe(97MaxGurl) she is going to be selling them in a few weeks. she should be able to answer any other questions you may regarding the CF hoods. the stock hood weighs 46-47lbs and the CF hood that AnGe is getting weighs 17-20lbs.

First of all, the 4th gens are about 3000lbs, not 3300+. Do I personally think 50 pounds is a lot on a 3000 lbs car? Not really. But a lot of guys on the org are more hard core then you are in weight savings. I mean, guys are breaking into 12's now. You don't think a guy running 12's would care about saving 40-50 lbs on a hood? I bet they would. As a single mod, it's not a big deal. But if you start shaving 40-50 lbs hear and there, that all adds up.

16-17 eh? Must be thicker then the civic ones. My buddy bought a civic one that was 9 lbs.

Sin you have a good point about guys running in 12's. I will say that in that case it would be a good mod, but for someone who is just starting out, I would recommend something more productive than that.

i like the way a cf hood looks.

i think the functionallity of one is down close to zero.

you gotta figure if your on the drag strip it may hurt a little bit due to the fact that you just took around 50 lb.s off the front wheels. this is based on the theory that people typically want to put more weight on the drive axles so they can hook up better. example i know a guy that use to race a pick up truck. and to add more weight to the back off his truck by throwing a few bags off cement in the bed tying them down some how and going out to the street races.

as far as weight reduction.........i agree wit sin replacing a cf hood to shave 50lb. of your total weight is pointless. now make the curb wiehgt off a 3000lb. car into say a 2400 lb car will help but 50lb???? not

my times at the track did not show any effect +/- before and after i got a cf hood.

My carbon fiber hood weighs 12 pounds and for me it's just something to have on my car that you notice up close and is yet another thing on the short list of modifications. Hood pins aren't annoying, although if you don't put them in and the hood flips up and snaps in half along with your windshield that's no good.

You can use your stock latch with the CF hood as well so you don't have to worry any more about people getting under your hood then normal.

And 50lbs is a lot when it comes to weight reduction, your jack and spare are about that and that is something people always remove. Weight reduction doesn't have to be 1,000lbs just less weight.

www.fiberimages.com is the only place to get a CF hood RIGHT now for our cars, apparently ange is getting some made and will have them soon as well, www.nopi.com is rumored to have 4th gen CF hoods as well.

The looks argument is entirely subjective and thus pointless. So let's drop that.

The weight reduction of a CF hood on a 4th gen is about 30lbs. Stock hood is ~45lbs and the CF hood is ~15lbs. 30lbs won't make much of a difference at the track, probably on the order of .03-.05 seconds if you do the math. That .03 seconds might just be the difference between winning and losing a race, or setting a new personal best or not. And this is just for drag racing. Other types of racing involve this crazy thing that most people don't think about called braking and another called handling. 30lbs is pretty significant when you are talking about the overall performance of a car. Lots of race series add weight to the faster cars so as to make the racing more even and entertaining, and many times these weight additions are 'only' 20 or 30 lbs and can make the difference between a podium finish and 4th or 5th place.
