$500 + Parts: Clutch job on '96 SE 5-Speed? Too much? Clutch failure symptoms?

I can't get my shifter into gear hardly. The pedal is very stiff and must start the car in gear or I won't be able to get going. From there its a battle to get to the next gear. There is no slipping though.

I was told by a local shop that its going to be $500 PLUS parts. Is that accurate? What do I need specifically?

Anyone recommend an aftermarket clutch?

Thanks all.

It sounds to me like its your slave cylendar, but it could also be your clutch throw out bearing siezing up but i think its your slave cylendar 500 labor is not too bad

Thanks, slave cylinder or throw-out bearing? I will mention that to the tech.

But 500 is not too good either.

dont misunderstand...a clutch work for 500 is good...replacing slave cylinder for 500 is expensive...

I had my master or slave cylinder replaced, I forget which. That is way higher than what I paid though, I think I paid $50 tops for just labor. The way I noticed my clutch was bad was that I would WOT in 5th gear and my RPMS would shoot up then come back down and "catch" and then accelerate..........

Get some free etimates from various places maybe

I had some problems getting into 2nd gear for a while on my '97SE but after the dealer flushed the transmission fluid, things because a lot better. Maybe that's something to try before shelling out a ton of money for a new clutch.

Still on my original clutch after 120K miles.

Whoa dude, nice lookin Z. Im guessing thats your ride with more potential right there. Dropping in a V8 into one of those badboys is like riding around in a supercharged viper. My buddy is planning on building a Z after he's done with his DSM. Im also very interested in Z's myself, but i havent the money for the hobby....yet. Again nice Z. How much HP you expecting from it...?

Thanks all.

Well mine wouldnt get into gear either. (Air in the lines). Then another time before this one the pedal was very very stiff. (pedal adjustment from the master cylinder. (so far so good. I got alittle more adjusting to do though)

sweet, with everything ihave right now ill only be making 280 at 3200rpm and 340lbft at 2700 rpm, but thats stock motor with a larger manifold. once i cam it i should make quite a bit more at a higher rpm. im lookin for about 600 horse before i reach the limits of the 6 point cage, by then ill have upgraded to the corvette IRS and ill have programmable injection on. i might go insane and make some twin turbo manifolds and then throw a 1000cfm flying toilet on it or something crazy, anyways if your in CT send me a mail some time and we can chill at the pike. -pete

I had my second clutch installed at a local garage. Total cost for labor was $300.00. You need to look around for a better price.

Thanks for the replies you guys. I will definitely have the other components checked out before I go buying a clutch and all, because it DOES still grab hard... Thanks again.

A year ago I had my clutch, bearings & seals replaced. Here's what I paid in Canadian Dollars: ($1CDN = $0.65US)

Remove/Replace transmission: $302.50
Clutch: $521.05
Turn Flywheel: $ 40.00
Bench Labour: $220.00
Seal Kit: $ 19.24
Balance Bearing Kit: $ 1.05

Grand Total>>>> $1,103.84 or approx. $717.50US and labour made up only about $340US of that

bro, i got the exact same problem..

shifter is hard as f-ck to move and my clutch is very hard to depress..

it's like there is something preventing me from pushing the clutch all the way in and my tranny thinks the clutch is not depressed so i am pushing my shifter into gear with great force..

500$ for labor is too much

i am shooting for like 250-350$..
