help my max is sick! (cylinder knocking)
help my max is sick! (cylinder knocking)
my max is sick!!!
one of the cylinders was slightly knocking before but it had some very nasty old oil! i changed the oil to mobil 1 synthetic and the knocking stopped. it was very slightly heard, barely audible, then today i finally replaced the original spark plugs to brand new ngk platinums and boom the cylinder started knocking audibly now. Help!! Is it one of my POS '99 Hanshin Ignition Coils? or can it be something else??? Knock Sensor??
it sounds like it's coming from one of the cylinders in the front(2 4 or 6) and i got a cylinder 4 misfire ECU code about a month ago, but then i cleared it, and it never appeared again.

Re: help my max is sick! (cylinder knocking)
what kind of knocking is it? does it get faster / louder with increased RPM? it could be anything from a valve... or i hate to say it could be a rod. i have not heard of anyone wearing out a rod bearing or conecting pin (rod to piston) in a max... but i guess there's a first. but if it is a rod, i don't see how changing your spark plugs could have made it come back. i'd say just take it to a tech and have it checked out. good luck though.
i'll try to eliminate the problem by switching the front coils since it seems like it is coming from the 4th cylinder i'll move it to the 6th and see whether it's a defective coil if the knocking moves to the other cylinder. too bad i don't have a voltmeter to test it.
can it be a piston ring seal?
when i change the fuel filter i'll also try to rent a compression tester and do a compression check and see if it narrows anything else down.
can it be a result of a rich or lean air/fuel ratio?
i'm going to the maxima meet on april 6th. can somebody bring a voltmeter with them and help me out???
i doubt if anyone else had the same problem but if you did please help!!!

still hating eh? don't take words close to heart. but to clarify.. i got some last night, and i'm probably going to get some tonight as well. knocking cylinder (or maybe valve) or not, my women like my car, but they like me more. flame all you want but what comes around goes around. you might not give a **** about your car, but i love mine passionately and when it's not well, i'm not well.
besides most girls don't know the difference between a knocking cylinder, a bent valve, a faulty knock sensor, a misbehaving ignition coil, or a timing belt that needs adjustment for that matter. and when i find one that does i'll be the happiest man alive.
besides professor gearhead does not give up, my baby will be new again in no time.

when did I flame?
when did I hate?
when did I say my hot girls thread had anything to do with me getting or not getting laid?
when did i say i don't give a **** about my car?
Basically I'm a good guy, I don't flame usually, and I started a fun little thread which you and a few others basically flamed and hated on. So not only are you accusing me of stuff I didn't do, but you're a hypocrite. So naturally i'm like "wtf did i do to deserve this?" and therefore I can't help but poke a little fun at you in this thread since you decided to hate in mine. so please stop flaming, hating, falsely accusing and implying things and being a hypocrite, and no i don't care whether or not you get some.

Changing your oil and putting new NGK spark plugs should NOT have made things worse. Have you rechecked your connections to your ignition coils? Are they all working properly? Faulty coils are somewhat common in our Maxima's. My engine si also knockin, and Im not throwing any code, I think its my fuel injectors, but I can somewhat compare to your situation. A couple of months ago I had a bad ignition coil, when I changed it, things got a better, but when one problem is fixed, two others show up
. Anyways, check the conections to the coils, and check the coils themselves. Hope you can fix your problem.

I would do as you said and try switching the coils to see if the knock moves with them.
but when one problem is fixed, two others show up
I think my engine may be knocking too, The only code I keep getting the damn 9-1 code for front right o2 sensor, I put a new one in and I'm still getting the code. We think I might be looking at a faulty ECU
