weather stripping... do i need to replace it??
weather stripping... do i need to replace it??
hey guys
I am trying to sound-deaden my car, but first i want to make sure that it isn't my weather stripping. I have a 96 maxima so the weather stripping is pretty old...
I don't feel any draft in my car but the noise is pretty bad. I don't know if it's worth replacing the stripping. I did buy this car used so i don't know if it has gotten bad since it was brand new. What do you guys think?? What exactly is the weather stripping... is it the rubber part between the doors?? Where are all of them at.
And finally... how much does this cost? I assume they're dealership items only. Thanks a bunch!

Mine is a 1996 also, but I have maintained the weatherstriping religiously with Meguire's Rubber and Vinyl Treatment #40 since I bought the car new, and the rubber weatherstriping is like new to this day.
Replacing new would require lots of expensive Nissan only replacements.
If you can find some junkyard cars and pick up weatherstriping from these cars at a substantial savings if the pieces aren't torn or cracked you can bring them back to like new with Meguire's Rubber and Vinyl Treatment! This will save you lots of cash.
You may want to use the Rubber Treatment on yours and that will soften it up real nice.
One word of caution is that I used the Rubber Treatment on the inside groove of the weatherstriping to keep it new also, and I have experienced occasional problems with the weatherstriping slipping off of his location. Use it sparingly on the inside groove to prevent this from happening to you.
Hope this Helps,

Weatherstripping that has been neglected will get hard from ozone and other weathering. This usually results in cracking and crinkling of the rubber. Tears are more likely when weatherstripping is neglected.
Weatherstripping around door openings and on doors, under the hood, and in the trunk opening are easiest to rubber treat.
I have even gone to the point of removing the door panels in order to rubber treat the rubber in the window tracks down below the window opening. I treated these and in addition used spray on white lithium to treat the actual window tracks to keep the windows moving freely so that the window motors don't have lots of friction to overcome when moving the windows up and down.
Hope this Helps,
