I seriously doubt there is a 1 second difference between the 96 and 97 model. How did you come up with those numbers?

The driver

Car's on paper and in real life are 2 different scenarios. The difference is a couple tenths of a second ( on paper the 96 is faster ), but it really comes down to the driver. I mean the difference between a v12 viper and a v4 lotus is .4 of a second, but you will hear people say the lotus will get smoked; were talking faster than you can blink twice.

It really is the driver, personally I would go with the 97 because it is newer and the older a car gets the slower it goes (generally speaking here), so actually now a 97 might be faster than a 96. Also with 97 se you get 16 inch 5 spoke alloys which are much better than the 96 se 15 inch swirl ones.

Also just a side note you will see people argue over 0-60 times like the other person is making up the time, when chances are they arent. Just pick up any two car magazines and the 0-60 times will be different for virtually ever car ( if they did the timing ). This is because of a million and one things; weather, temperature of road & tires, conditions on road, even your altitude plays a role in 0-60.
Just get whichever one you like better/find a better deal on.

Hmmm, a little bit of here fellas,

Motor Trends #'s are as follows,
95SE 5spd 0-60=6.6 and 1/4=15.2,
97SE 5spd 0-60=7.1 and 1/4=15.5,
as you can see the difference is neglagable infact I bet if you put wheels from a 95 on a 97 then the 0-60 would have been almost adentical.

Also for the guy that stated get a 98 because the grill and tails are better, this switch happened in 97 so iether 97 or 98 will have the same appearance. The only standard feature that differs between the 97 and 98 is the odometer switched from analog to digital in 98.

Attn.Victim64, I was wondering why exactly you and others have said 95-96 take mods better? The only thing I can think of that is different as far as mods go is that there is no performance ECU available for 98+ and after market exausts don't stick out like they do on 95-96.Thanks

I say grab a 97-98 that just came off lease and have fun!

i say go with the 95.They all can be modded the same and you get a faster stock maxima with the 95. They all are about the same in 0-60 time, but i would go with 95. Good luck

Which 4th Gen to get

Rasta Rocket,

listen to nforg and emax95. They're advice is TOTALLY ON POINT. What the 97-99s may lack in acceleration, which really ain't much at all, they more than make up for in build quality and younger age.

I mean, c'mon, aren't those standard SE 16" rims one of the most gorgeous OEM rims you're ever seen? They slowed the 0-60 by half a sec, but they also increased the handling and looks. And, if you really want to get the best 0-60, sell those rims and downgrade to 15s. I bet you'll have a much easier time getting rid of those 16s than if you had the 15s to get rid of

I just got my 97 blaquemax SE last week. I am VERY happy with it. It was a leased car and has 42000 miles on it. I dont know about 0-60 times. It is plenty quick for me. I say get the 97 or newer and make sure you get an SE or GLE to get some cool options.

I agree with the idea of buying a 97 or 98 off of a lease. I just found and bought a 98 SE with 34,000 miles, leather, and everything else. I love it. Heck, it's plenty quick for me. In my opinion, the stock GXE and GLE's look like a_ s. I mean they have the ugliest wheels on both of them. In my opinion, the thing that makes the Max is the 16" 5 star wheels and the spoiler. Try for recently turned in 97 or newer. Definately go with the SE. Check out my car if you like. http://www.ericmillard.com

- I agree with what you said on the driving conditions, but a Dodge Viper utilizes an 8.0L V-10, not a "v-12" and certain Lotuses use an INLINE 4 cylinder, not a "v-4." Only a few eccentrics (many of whom failed in business) in history have ever used a V-4. Inline fours are very smooth engines because the length of the crankshaft, combined with a four-banger's firing order provides for a very balanced engine. If you had a V-4, the crankshaft is essentially the length of an inline 2 cylinder, which is not nearly as smooth.
- Maxima's of the 4th Generation variety evolved in three stages. The 95-96 model years are the fastest by a narrow margin. For the 97-98 model years, better bumpers and a more environmentally friendly, but restrictive, exhaust was utilized, effectively slowing down the car. The 99's were again subjected to even more stringent emissions laws and have an even more restricive exhaust. They are the slowest in stock form. (Interestingly enough, Nissan jumped the gun by a year and met 2000 model year emissions standards on the 99's.)
- Basically, the cars are all the same once you redo the exhaust. But if you live in a crowded city, go for one with the better bumpers. ;-)
