desperate help/annoying knocking
someone please help me out im about to go nuts with that knocking...
Could someone tell me if they have experienced this before or heard or something.... I hear a loud knocking from the engine bay like if the lifters or something are hitting the top, but its not coming from the top of the engine its from the side where all the belts are... It does get faster with the higher rpm and its very loud coming from the belts...
Does anyone have any clue on what it is? If its coming from the belts making a KLUNK KLUNK KLUNK noise what could it be? Do belts when they get old make a KLUNK noise or what?

I think that price is mostly labor related. Or is that the cost of the chain??? Where are you getting that number?

It's on the belt side, under the timing chain cover.
I guess it's a pretty time consuming job to do.
Anyone ever done it?
Also, you may want to ask around about a tsb. I think there is one.
Actually, if there is, can someone pm me with the info? I read it
on the .org before but alas...search...

It is not the timing chain! I bet anything! Unless you have more or close to 150K on your Max, it is NOT the timing chain! I have yet to hear of a 4th gen maxima whose timing chain gave out before 150K or so. Although different places specify different mileage at which to replace the chain, 99.9% of the time it is guaranteed to last until 150K. Also, this one mechanic told me that the lifetime of the timing chain does not depend on how hard you drive your car, but rather on how old the timing chain is, the weather that the car resides in, and, most importantly, the mileage.

Is your car running any differently? Sometimes a bent valve can cause a noise like your talking about. My roomate had a Type-R that had the same symptoms, he was taking it to the limit on the entrance ramp of a highway, was in v-tec coming up on redline and shifted from 3rd to second (he meant to go into 4th) the piston smacked his exhaust valve and bent it (all honda driver jokes welcomed by the way.)

Could very well be the timing chain, probably not
There are plastic guides around the timing chain assembly that basically guide the chain. They use plastic because it doesnt make noise. However once the plastic wears off or melts off the chain spins around metal guides (below the plastic).
This can cause a "whirring" noise. not necessarily a knock.
A distinct "knock" can be caused by a number of things. Probably not the chain which spins. Knocks are usually caused by things that move up and down or side to side.
Best bet is to do a compression test and see if there is equal compression. Nissan engines are notorious for bearing failure. If your crankshaft pulley is jumping up and down thats what it probably is. The first bearing to go is the one on the pulley side of the engine.
My advice would be to do an engine swap with a junkyard motor.
then sell the car

ok, uhm... uhm... uhm...
i just went outside and its not the timing chain because its not coming from there. its coming from under that where the pullys are... I would have to get a whole new engine if the little bearings screwed up? WHY?!
