bad news from mechanics

Well some of you know of my unfortunate troubles that im having with a knocking sound coming from my engine... I took it in for a rough estimate and I got some pretty interesting news.....

They are not clearly sure what the problem is either the waterpump or the timing chain... sadly there labor is a big pain in the butt... Heres the parts list I need some maxima expert advice... I rather get a new engine for the price of this...

- Timing Chain, Includes: R&R Front Timing Cover
- Timing Chain Guide
- Tension Side/Upper/Center/Lower
- Timing Chain Tensioner
- Camshaft/Right
- Water Pump

Labor: $649
Parts Cost: $287

What do you guys think??? Im going to try a mechanic friend of mine who probably wont charge me as much labor... Sucks to be meeeee my friends...

EDIT: Sorry about the repost, I really meant to post in the 4th.

I don't like that line.
Don't have all that work done only for the knock to still be there...

Yeah, good luck.
Maybe you could get the parts and do it yourself???
Is it a DIY job?
How much do you think it'd be to get a new engine installed?

It is definately not a DIY job. For the kid who has the knock, you could have already done extensive damage to the inside of the engine, so you might want to consider a new motor. When I blew my motor I bought a used for $500 with 60k on it, came with a one year parts and labor warranty, even came with a new clutch too off of a totaled 97 Max, If you would ever consider doing it there is also a vin tag on the motor as well where you can do a carfax check on it as well. The whole job cost me $1100 bucks. Car runs great. just a suggestion

Prices I got quoted to me from Courtesy Nissan...

The prices are as follows:

Main chain: $60.11
Cam chains: $42.32 each
Tensioners for cam chains: $57.48 each
Main guides: $10.31
$23.93
$57.48
Main tensioner:
$57.48
Large guide bolt: $1.89

He told you need a new front and rear case also? I don't see why. Unless he messes yours up taking it apart.

Is this what Nissan said your car needed or was this some independent shop. For some repairs, Nissan techs aren't needed, but for something like this you need Nissan. If you're worried about the motor, simply check the compression and then check the vacuum. Those two things will tell you A LOT about the motor. Getting a new motor sounds easy and all, but remember how much you'll spend on install also. $800-1000 for a motor, $1000 for install.

It took only 12 hours to swap the motor. That should equal $700 for labor, paid $512 for my motor (60k) with 1 year parts and labor warranty, (ABC/Greenleaf Used Auto, Leominster Ma.) A new or reman motor goes for about $4,000-$5,000

loose timing chains or bad waterpumps do not necessarily cause knock.

there area number of factors that can cause knock. compression tests and vacuum measurements will only tell so much. usually the only way to truly find out is tearing apart the motor.

if your motor is truly knocking it won't stop by just changing the chain and waterpump.

now, if there's a rattle coming from the chain or a scratching sound, that's a different story.
however, sounds like it could be time for a used motor.
