Couldnt get my Old starter off...need help!!

hey wassup, i tried taking my old busted starter off today as my car is completely dead, doesnt start at all nomore...i removed my intake and went at it...but the two bolts just wouldnt move, i think one is torque spec'd at 70 lbs or so, so its gonna be tough...i tried some liquid wrench on the bolt, didnt even budge it..got it from the auto store close by there as i have no car to get anywhere else, but i was looking for sum PB penetrating catalyst...R&S strauss is gay, they dont have good stuff, they overprice, and they dont lend tools, cuz a breaker bar and torque wrench is what i need...any other suggestion besides finding a guy thats diesel as hell??

Try Parts stores as they lend tools. You need an 1/2 inch drive break bar (18 inches long) and a 17 mm socket for rear starter mounting bolt. I have used a segment of steel pipe slipped over the end of a 12 in 1/2 inch drive socket to accomplish the same thing. For front mounting bolt you need a 12 in 1/2 inch ratchet and a 14 mm socket. Without the break bar or pipe that 17mm bolt will stay put.

can someone tell me how to change the starter and how to get to it. My starter just died in front of my girlfriends house, good thing it didn't die at the movie theaters where it was the last time i started my car. Well I need to do it really quickly because I need my car for work tomorrow. Can ya please tell me every tool I need and how much is a new starter, and all the steps on how to change it. Thanks

Starters range from $79.00 with exchange (generic) and up to $200.00 + with exchage. I got mine from www.partznet.com for $184.00. They sell OE parts there at great prices. As for tools and removal, you really do need the big ratchets / breaker bars to remove the starter. I have a little pit in my garage so it was still a PIA to remove the starter. But I really did almost broke a knuckle. You can also go to this site for
reference www.cybrrpartspro.com/Chilton%20Manuals/8961m/8961CH02_22.html
I hope this helps.

You will need a LONG breaker bar to remove those starter bolts. The one closer to the firewall was hardest to remove for me. It's a long bolt (probably over half a foot). I had to use my torque wrench to remove that one. It made a horrible snapping noise (the bolt) when I loosened it, but it did not break. Good luck.

Pick up a Hayne's manual to familiarize yourself with the location and removal procedure of the starter. If you cannot find the starter on your own, you should do this job "by the book."

PS: to anyone who hasn't done this job before-

Spray lube or penetrating lubricant will NOT DO JACK to help you loosen the starter mounting bolts, as it will never reach the threads (located deep into the top of the bell-housing) at the ends of the LOOOONG mounting bolts.

Yes, a long, 1/2" breaker bar is the way to go on this one.

Also: There is possibly a starter removal "HOW-TO" at www.motorvate.ca

well i took off my like a year ago. The very last bolt is ALWAYS the hardest, no matter what kind of job your doing.
Well since i didn't have a breaker bar i use regular wrenches. I used the 17mm then just added a secound one to the end of it. I'll try to explain it. With the 17mm wrench (circle side) on the bolt and the open part towards you add a secound wrench like a 16mm to the end. Damn i know that makes no sence what so ever nut give it a try. Once you add the secound wrench it becomes like a 20inch wrench. You will still need to give it alot of euuhhhhhhh!!!!!

1/2" socket, 1/2" breaker bar

3/8" socket, 3/8" breaker bar

As far as I know, breaker bars aren't available as loaners. Pony up the dough - you'll use it again.

You'll need a 1/2 in to 3/8 in adapter. About $5 at sears.
