A/C Blower problem

Hi, i am new to this forum...i just bought a nice 1996 maxima a few days ago. I love this car! This blower probale was something i new about when i bought the car. Basically what happens is the fan ONLY blows on the highest speed setting (4). When it is at this speed, the defrost works well, as well as the heat or AC. The blower also make a quiet clicking sound when it is going, which turns into kind of a deep wheering sound as the fan slows to a stop. Again, nothing happens on settings 1-3, but it works fine, with only a quiet sound on 4. If anyone know what this problem is, and how to fix it/what part i will need please post a reply.
thank you

There is a air cooled resistor in the fan housing in the passenger foot well area. It is held by only two screws. The new version has a better heat sinking capability. It is better to change it now then being stuck in the max or nothing mode.

Info. If you own a 95 to 97 and have not changed it yet, I suggest you keep one in youre glove compartiment with a #2 phillips screwdriver!!!

Blower motor resistor. I just replaced mine on my 96. Its behind the glove box. Its easy to replace and not too expensive from the dealer, i believe it was like 30 bucks.
