Possible Misfire Problem or Bad Alertnator

Hey guys,
Over the last 3 week I have been having problems starting my car. I would start the car and it would start for a split second and turn right back off and this usually happened weekly. At first I thought it might be a bad battery or bad tension on my belts. I checked out both and both were fine. This week this starting problem has been happening more often and today the car started but the RPM level was going from 500 to 1100 up and down in park with a accecleration noise without be pressing the gas pedal. I turned off the car went outside and noticed a strong gas smell. I really doubt it's my alternator and my friend said he had a similar problem with his 99 Maxima and he thinks it's a misfire. What do you guys think?

Re: Possible Misfire Problem or Bad Alertnator

Hey Guys,

I know that this is one of the most major and hardest to solve problems with the Maximas. I already know 6 people from here (including me is 7) that have the same kinds of starting problem, and can't seem to fix it. The symptoms are almost always the same: RPM's shifting anywhere between 500 and 1500, car shaking violently, and then stalling. I have heard Nissan say that the possible causes could be faulty or dirty injectors, IACV (idle air control valve), PCV valve, dirty throttle body, spark plugs, a bad ground, old fuel filter, etc.... The list just keeps going on and on. From what I know, people are just sick and tired of replacing these things and finding that the problem still hasn't been eliminated. I just wish Nissan or somebody did an investigation as to what the real problem is, and not have more people spend their money. But does anyone finally know?
