A misfire is when one of your sparkplugs doesn't light the mixture in one of your cylinders, this can be caused by a number of things. Whats happening in your car probably has something to do with your IAC.

bad fuel injector too. Symptoms: The car shakes real bad at idle...you can feel the steering wheel + shifter shakings, performance is also gone, studders during acceleration.

Re: What Happens When A Car Misfire

Hey Guys,

I know that this is one of the most major and hardest to solve problems with the Maximas. I already know 6 people from here (including me is 7) that have the same kind of starting problem, and can't seem to fix it. The symptoms are almost always the same: RPM's shifting anywhere between 500 and 1500, car shaking violently, and then stalling. I have heard Nissan and other people here say that the possible causes could be faulty or dirty injectors, IACV (idle air control valve), PCV valve, dirty throttle body, spark plugs, a bad ground, old fuel filter, etc.... The list just keeps going on and on. From what I know, people are just sick and tired of replacing these things and finding that the problem still hasn't been eliminated. I just wish Nissan or somebody did an investigation as to what the real problem is, and not have more people spend their money. But does anyone finally know what the REAL cause is without having any more people guess?

i ran into the same problem about 4 years ago. i took it to the dealers several times before finding out the problem (they've cleaned the TB and injectors but didn't help). the problem i had was with the throttle body positioning sensor. after it was replaced, it never happened again. so check it out.

So all this is happening and your car is not throwing any codes?

Never had the rpm problems, but recently my car was misfiring and once driven for a while a cylinder misfire turned up. I eventually replaced the coil pack and smoothness and power were restored.

That's the code my car has been throwing: 0403-throttle position sensor. It's a stored code, so without checking, I might never have found it. Sounds like a strong suspect...

Alright I've been having the same problem as stated for a couple weeks now and yesterday I've changed the sparkplugs, cleaned the throttle body, and got a new air filter. Still the same problem and today I am going to check out the throttle positioning sensor, tho I did take the green machine to the nissan dealer and talked with the mechanic and he told me it might be the throttle sensor and an idle starter or something. I will work on both today and report back if the problem goes away.

My car has been having weird idle, one moment its 600 then 750. It may go up and down a little within that range. When I listen to my intake when the car is idling, it sounds like hickups, almost like a drum roll. What do you guys think may be the problem?

I'm having a similar problem, but it's just starting. When I start the car the idle goes to like 1000-1500rpm then drops down, almost stalls, well sounds like it, then it goes back to normal idle. I'll make sure I put this thread in my favorites. It's great to have all this positive feedback.

A throttle sensor is 60-70 bucks, fuel filter shouldn't cost you more than 15 bucks and iginition coils are I think around $100. Heres a good site to get some info from.
