I was recommended not to use Syn. Tran. fluid...why?

I had a coupon for Jiffy Lube and was at the place for an oil change/wash. The guy changing my oil called me over to the car and said a few things and then asked about tranny fluid. I said I was doing it mself soon, but if they had good fluid I would let them do it since it is only $40.00 (almost the cost of the fluid). Unfortunately he said they use some penzoil stuff and I told him I wanted a synthetic. He then shocked me and said I shouldn't use a synthetic in a manual transmission and that any mechanic or dealer would tell me the same. He didn't say why so I just said OK thanks for the tip and paid for the oil change.

Any clues why he would say that? Besides the obvious that he wants my business. I have 92000 miles on the car.

I second that, he obviously doesn't have any idea what he's talking about. I would ask him where he got his information. There's a slight mileage increase and the cold weather shiftability is greatly enhanced, not to mention the high temperature shear protection.

It could be that he was talking about GL5 fluid. GL5 fluid is a no-no in our cars we need GL4. Maybe most synthetic fluid is GL5 and that's what he meant. I've had GL4 synthetic in my car and I know a number of other people on this board who have as well and they swear by it.

It might be a money thing too...... Non-Synthetic fluid wont last as long, so it needs to be changed more often, alot like the whole motor oil thing.......

Jiffy lube guys are not that bright.... this guy i know used to work there, and he asked me to help change his brake pads one day.

But synth can be made in Gl4. Redline and amsoil's both are GL4...

I've used synthetic gear oil in manual transmisions/transaxles and differentials on cars, trucks and motorcycles for decades with outstanding results. If you want to see some recent pics of a magnetic drainplug that came out of a Subaru Legacy transaxle with ~120K on AMSOIL 75w-90, let me know and I'll send them to you...the magnet had virtually no wear metals. Just because a guy works at an oil change place doesn't mean he knows anything about lubricants...it kills me when I hear stories like this. Ed

If he's over 25, there's a reason he's working at the J-lube....
