Who's "they" ? Oil is oil as long as it meets the minimum certification requirements. I run 5w/30 year round but switch to synthetic in the winter for better flow at our ridiculous low temps. The rest of the year I like only paying $6 for oil and filter...
Amsoil here too. If I raced my car, I would most likely run Redline. I run the Amsoil and it's partner filter. It caused my check engine light to come on for about 100 miles then the idle corrected and has been fine ever since then.....
Re: Oil
Read this article and let me know if you still have the same opinion. If not, please state the reasons. I'll agree oil that has the correct certifications will "work" but "oil is not oil".

If you change your oil as recommended by your owners manual, then you should not have any problems. That is straight from Consumer Reports. They said additives such as Slick 50 and Synthetic oils are basically a waste of money because the test,s that they did showed that none of these items did anything that was significant to improve the overall life of the engine or it,s inner components. Of course I may get some people thinking I,m crazy but even Daniel B. "Maxima" Martin uses Texaco I believe and Daniel has certainly earned a respected opinion on this forum.

I currently use Royal Purple synthetic motor oil.
At this time, I wouldn't use any other... You can
find out more about it at:

A friend of mine who raced up in Canada swore by
the stuff. He went a full season WITHOUT a rebuild
running 23 events in a modified class.

Ehh, I read/skimmed the article (waaayyy too long & I read too much during work hours). The only real facts I saw that apply to non racing cars (which ours are NOT) is that synthetic flows at extremely low temps. Most people on this board don't even live in areas that see temps even close to the lows that I see in IA. I understand..I grew up in Long Island and never experienced cold like the midwest. For example we may go 10 days with a high of -12 (not including wind chill). Only Synthetic oil flows well at these temps at start up (I know from experience). Other than that, if you change oil every 3000 miles non synthetic oil will afford more than satisfactory protection. I had a friend in High School whose dad was lazy and never changed the oil in his 78 Impala from when he bought it new. Last I knew it had 150K with the original oil! Strange but true... PS my friend was an extreme self made motorhead who is the most intleligent guy I've ever met (inclusing Warren Buffet).
So, 5w-30 for the winter and 10w-30 for the warmer weather is what you guys would recommend? I run sythetic now and use 10w-30 all the time, but it's almost time to change it again and i'm thinking about 5w-30 for the next couple of months. Is switching for the winter better or will it not really matter?
