Advice on 99 Cal spec motor in 97

I am looking in buying a motor to put in my 97. The place I'm gettin it from has a bunch of motors but the ones they could sell for the cheapest would either a 99 Cal spec motor w/ 80k miles or a 96 w/ 90k miles on it. I am curious if there is any difference in the Cal spec maxima engines other than the exhaust... will that engine work on my car? and will the manifolds from my car fit that one? thanks for the help guys...

Cali Spec engines have more smog junk on the intake & exhaust system. You'll need a Cali Spec ECU & wiring harness if you just do a complete swap. If your just using the block & heads you should be OK. You'll have to swap your complete intake system and a few other goodies onto that motor. The EGR and EVAP system might have a few changes also.

Your 97 ECU may not be able to hook up to the 99 Cali motor, but maybe it can If the 99 Cali motor were to require the 99 ECU, then avoid it completely b/c 99 Cali's are the least aftermarket friendly. The Y pipe has 4 O2 sensors in it so you can not get rid of the pre-cats like in the 95-98 Maximas. Safest bet would be to get the 96 motor.

what are you speaking of? butterfly valves in what? and what do the 99's have different from the 95-98's cause i'd be happy w/ the 99 as long as i can just bolt up everything that's on my wiring harnes to fit and work for this motor...

I believe 99s have butterfly valves in the lower intake manifold called Swirl Control Valves. They supposedly change the turbulence of the air coming in or something so that the fuel burns off more cleanly at low RPMs. At least I think that's what they do...
