EPA ratings are done at 65MPH maximum for the highway.

I usually get about 27, 28 mpg when I'm doing a steady 80 or so on the interstate. However, if I get on the pedal for passing much or I have to take it out of cruise, it goes down around 24-25 mpg. I only use Chevron premium in my car and don't put anything else in there.

Dude, you really get 510 miles out of a tank? 18.5 gallons times 27 miles per gallon (the published gas mileage) is just under 500 miles. How the heck you get 510? That would put your gas mileage at 27.57 mpg. At 510 miles your gas gauge needle has to be like right on the little rest pin there is for it. 510 is inconceivable for me. I have been filling up every time I got gas for the last seven or eight months to check my mileage and at best I have gotten consistently 19 to 21 mpg for maybe 65% city 35% highway driving (with a WOT run every now and then) and I get around 24 or 25 with total interstate driving around 80 mph. My trip odometer never gets far past 340 miles or so with the light on before I chicken out and get gas.

That's what i get with BP/Amoco 92Octane
510 pure highway no stops and it makes a big difference if you do highway and city.
i get 260 all city and around 325 city and highway but that number usually changes.

510 isnt completly impossible, but you must drive like my grandma. all highway ive gotten 29.2 as my record. with ypipe intake and 89 octane, driving a sustained 70mph(it was raining). ive been using 93octane and a new fuel filter, so i hope to break 30mph next time it rains and i have to drive slower.

I get 510 driving at 80 so i don't know what road your driving on but 80 isn't grandma, lol
plus i only use 92 or 93 octane in my car and i'm stock except for the intake, port polish, and B-pipe.

He was probably going downhill in neutral half the time

510 mi per tank is REALLY good. I usually get 410mi. every fill up. I think it's pretty good for my normal commute that involves stop/go traffic... 90% highway miles.

Yeah...I get about 400 miles for every full tank on only premium gas. I average about 80mpg on the freeway. About 90% of those miles are freeway miles.

I average 29-30 mpg at 75mph with cruise & A/C on. Just checked it on a 2500 mile trip.

Around 24mpg mixed driving.

Obviously, going full throttle will decrease your mileage significantly. I can see the gauge drop after a high speed, full throttle run.

I'm getting 253 miles (50% city/50% HWY) on my full tank. Probably the engine light (bad sensors) that's killing my gas. Anybody know the
price to get the sensor replace in a repair shop?

I just got back off of a 2300 mile trip and the first leg was from Austin,TX to New Orleans,LA. That's a 515 mile trip and I filled up on the was out of Austin and made it to New Orleans on one tank, the odometer read 512 when I filled it back up with 17.3 gallons. I know I could have gotten a few more miles because the gas light had barely came on. Thing is I was driving at night with no AC and I never went above 80. 79 to be exact because the po po's were all over the place. Before I did a major tune up though I had to stop in Baton Rough at about 450 miles for gas. I guess it pays to keep it tuned up. My only mods are Mobile One synthetic oil and a drop in K&N air filter.

I just did a double round-trip drive in 2 days, which was 125 miles each way. Most of it was with the cruise on at 75 MPH with a couple of "playing" moments up to 100 MPH. With exactly 500 miles on the trip, it took 17.8 gallons to fill it up. That was on 87 octane w/ additive and an all stock setup with 92k miles on it.

I usually get 500 miles total highway and around 350-375 with mostly city and a little highway. Even with all city driving and "driving enthusiastically", I've never got less than 325 miles on a tank.

I have also noticed that manual cars seem to get worse MPG than me(an auto.

I did a mileage check last week. I drove a 200+ mile trip of all freeway driving and got 32 MPG. Filled up just before I left and just as I got back. I'm just running a K&N drop in, NGK's and use 92 octane gas.

do we get better mileage with cruise on or off?
My guess would be on, because the engine keeps accelerating, any ideas?

If you are indeed going constant speed you get better gas mileage when your are constant. If you have to slow down and then hit the resume button a lot during a trip, that can kill your gas mileage with all of that accelerating. I guess if you get back up to speed manually and more gradually, it may not hurt you as bad, but who's gonna do that? Also if there are a lot of hills, people say that the gas mileage is hindered because the car will not slow when it hits the hills, it will give the engine more gas to maintain the same speed going up the hill. But personally, I do that anyway even when I'm not in cruise cause I like to keep my speed constant anyway. So maybe my mileage really comes out the same with respect to the hills.

Re: average on highway(gas mileage)

Since the lift of the 55 mph restriction, I think it's safe to say that highway MPG tests are done at 65mph.

27 might be right if you're running steady at 90mph. Just as a test, I cruised evenly at 70mph for a good solid hour and got 32.5mpg. But I typically average 26mpg (city/highway combined). A lot of it can do with your driving style.

Okay, so what is your style? Even at constant 70, 32.5 seems a bit liberal to me. You do indeed do the fill-up/drive/refill thing and divide the gallons refilled by the miles travelled during the "solid hour," right? Anyway, if 32.5 is really what you get, I will never understand that. I got my car tuned up (allbeit rather needlessly) and I still don't get more than 21 with my "city/highway combined." Techs always compliment me on the care I give the car, so I know there is nothing wrong. What exact percentage of each (highway and city) would you say you drive?

Solid cruising at 75-80 will get me 30 MPG. A full tank of only city driving will get me around 22 mpg. I've got a '97 w/ Auto.

I would say that you to get on the 30's at a steady 80 mph, you would need to do it on an interstate and use the cruise as much as possible. Since my college town (Tuscaloosa) is connected with my former hometown (Mobile) by mostly 2 lane roads (there are some 4 lane hwy's in there, but the bulk of the distance is two-lane), my mileage figures come from that drive. On a trip to Atlanta from Mobile, all interstate, I got about a steady 31 mpg keeping the cruise on as much as possible and not having the A/C compressor blowing the whole time.

I'm not heavy on the gas and I don't accelerate quickly out of the gate (just when merging onto the highway, avoiding idiot drivers, or for the helluvit once in a while). I clocked it exactly (filled up before and filled up after, did the math). I was driving using cruise control during the day and in dry weather, so no lights and wipers. Temperature outside was about 60 degrees (weather can make a difference). I have no engine mods. As for hwy/city combined, probably 60/40, although I do a lot of short trips too. I have heard that the 95's get the best gas mileage of the 4th gen.

Daniel B. Martin had some excellent knowledge on the subject--wish he were still around to consult.

Well, excuse me, then. I guess since I have a 97 I just have to sacrifice a little gas money for better looks.

Re: average on highway(gas mileage)

you really should try to be between 65-70 for peak fuel efficiency, at 80 or 90 you will see a very sharp decline from what i've seen from past highway trips
