help with courtesy door lights

hey guys I know this might not be all that important but I'm sure some people out there have the same problem as I do, that would like some help from some of u smart .org people....anyway my front passenger courtesy light isn't working and it isn't the bulb either cuz i swapped it with a fresh one and it still won't work.....my drivers side courtesy light works fine....I had talked to someone about it and said it could be the door switch is bad thats why the light won't come on....so I changed it and it didn't solve anything....the wires where the courtesy light sit doesn't seem to be burnt or nuttin. Well what do you guys think? I really wanna dress up my interior and it sucks to only have 1 light workin =( ....any suggestions comments will be appreciated =)...thanks

I have the same problem, i'veb een looking into trying to find a remedy, but haven't had time yet. I'm thinking there is a fuse somewhere in the line for the light, but I have no idea. If it was the switch the interior light would not come on, so it's not that.

if your dome light is workiong or map light then its not the fuse. Wiring could be fried in that area. use a voltmeter to see if your getting any current at all.

Mmmm, I'd be interested in an answer to this too. I have a drivers side light thats not working. Its got a good bulb and fuse. Is there like a CPU reset for a door computer or something? I was trying to wire more lights to under the dash and momentaliy shorted out the light, and now it wont work. Theres no burned wires either.

Its either the fuse or the actual harness where the bulb plugs into is corroded. Mine was corroded, so I took a wire brush and scraped it. Worked fine since then.

That happened to me... my suggestion was going to be a new switch but apparently you've already tried that. Mine blew because I accidentally shorted out the circuit when trying to remove the bulb. The fuse and wiring was fine but the window switch needed to be replaced (the windows only worked intermittently and I couldn't lock the doors with the remote).

But if your switch, bulb and fuse are fine...

Both courtesy door lights go directly into LocalControl units located in each door, if you checked everything else and no result, then you need a new unit. (Local Control Unit=Power window switch). In my case I put in a high wattage bulb on driver side, and burnt the power window switch, new one is around $110 from dealer. If you did something similar with your DOME light then you need a new Body Control Module, that's where it gets the ground. Check fuses and wiring first though.

hey i just took a digital multimeter and measured how many volts were flowing through both courtesy lights.....both sides measured 12.73 volts.....???? damn i guess the only thing left is that window switch Speebs was talkin bout.....but my windows work fine? cuz i already replaced the door switch and measured the voltage and nothing changed.....do you think i should use something else to dress up my interior instead of hyperwhite bulbs? what do you .org members suggest?

Was I mistaken, or did I hear that you can reset these local control units? Is there a reset button on it?

wait, steve, your saying that on both sides, they both measure 12 volts? even on the dead side??

At that point i'd try another light in there... if theres voltage there, it's going to work. Sounds simply like the light is burnt.

You have a bad ground. You should have 12V on one side and ZERO on the other.

I believe the circuit works by supplying a constant voltage to the light circut and the door switch completes it by grounding it. If the ground on the door switch is not clean, that will cause a no current flow condition.

Check your grounds or make a new one.

multiplexor it can't be my bulbs because i tried it on the other side and it works fine. i took the multimeter and put the positive to the gold plated area where the bulb sits, and the negative to a bolt near the door hinge....as weird as it may sound both, sides measured 12.73 volts. hey tom what do you mean by cleaning my door switch ground? wheres that located?

easy just take off the plastic part by using a flat head screwdriver....then pull the bulb out of the housing
