225/50-16 or 225/55-16 for 99 se?
which one is the right one to use when doing the "plus-0" tire re-sizing? i always thought that you would increase the first number by one unit, and decrease the second number by one unit. since the original size is 215/55-16, i thought the new size should be 225/50-16, but discount tire is showing 225/55-16 as the plus-0 size.
i checked the diameters and they are -1/2 inch for the 225/50-16, and +1/2 inch for the 225/55-16, so it is just a slight difference on either side.
any comments, suggestions, real-life experiences?
thanks all.

Interesting,
I always thought that if I were to keep the same 55 series I would be good to go, is this true? I thought that just increasing the width is all I need. Why would I need to go to a 50 series? I'm going to be getting new tires soon so I guess this'll just help my situation!

Hey birthday boy! LOL
Use this link to see what sizes you can run and still have the same OD on the tire. You don't really have alot of choices becuase of your rim width but this is a good link to have around.

Decreasing Wheel wall
when you increase rim you have to decrease the side wall so that your speedo doesn't go off to much this is called +sizing right(etc. 205/60/15 to 225/50/16)
well, for a p7000 supersport, the diameter for a 225/50-16 is 24.9 inches, and for a 225/55-16 is 25.7 inches. for the stock tires 215/55-16 goodyear rs-a the diameter is 25.2 inches. the thing i see is that you are going to have a little speedometer inaccuracy in either case, but maybe the 225/55-16 tire will look bigger and fill in the ugly gap in the wheel well better than the 225/50-16?
anyone know what the rim width of the 5-spoke se wheel is?
anyone know what the rim width of the 5-spoke se wheel is?
On my 96Se, the stock size is 215/60/15, and I am using 225/50/16 on a set of 16x7.5 OZ. Here is a quick tabulation I did:
size diameter actual when speedo showing 60
215/60/15 25.16" 60
215/55/16 25.31" 60.34
225/50/16 24.86" 59.28
225/55/16 25.74" 61.38
Personally I'd prefer to use 225/55/60 but there are fewer tire selections in the market. That's why I am using 225/50/16s.

I put 225/50/16 on my 99SE.....speedo was exactly on at 60 before now it is going 58.5 when the speedo is showing 60 (per GPS) I like the "slightly" better gear ratio for acceleration with the slightly smaller tires also even if it is minimal it cant hurt. Auto trans is geared too high already. Wheel gap is ugly but tires look very aggressive. Toyo FZ4's Much much better than my old RSA's!!!!!!!!!
I think that I'm going to go with the 225/55/16. Although my speedo might be off that lil bit. I don't have my car lowered yet which is one reason. I hate the gap that I have now. I just think that it would be more exxagerated with 50 series. Thanks for the great info! This has really helped alot!
My '96 Maxima GXE had stock 205/65/15. Last week I plus sized them (plus 1) to 225/55/16, wrapped with TOYO FZ-4 rubber. I'm very happy with the choice of tires and the size of them. BTW, the difference in the amount of sidewall between the 50's & 55's is only 11.25mm. Not much of a difference now is it. Remember, anytime you want to know how big your sidewall will be, just do the following:
example - 225 x 0.55=123.75mm
225 x 0.50=112.5mm
---------
11.25mm
The aspect ratio is the percent of the tire's width.

thanks all for the great input. i think i am also going with the 225/55-16. there is probably a performance hit, because the tire is bigger and heavier (inertia), but i would imagine that it would be a better for when i reach cruising speed. now i have to decide between three tires -- bridgestone re730, dunlop sp sport 8000, and the pirelli p7000 supersport. anyone want to make suggestions? (i started another thread on this a few day ago)

I use sunlop sp sport 8000(235/45/17) but it sucks....don't get dunlop.....get pirelli p7000. one of mah friends got pirelli p7000(245/35/18) on his max and it is even much better than dunlop even if it is lower profile....
so my opinion is go with pirelli or Michellin(correct spelling?) MXX3.
ohhh man...
I got 99 SE rims for my 93 SE maxima, the tires on the rims are 215/60/16! It looks like a monster truck sometimes and sits kind of high... I bought the rims used with the tires... The stock rims on my car were 15 by 6.5" the tires were 205/65/15... I wonder how bad is my speedometer off....
but acceleration feels poor, i suppose due to the larger overall diameter.
