difference between 55 and 50 series tires
Hey everyone!
I have a few questions. I am looking at getting some 16's for my 96 gle. I chose 16's because i want a comfortable yet sporty ride. So i hope that 16's will give me this.
I know that many use 225/50-16, but what about 225/55-16? I think the 55 series is more in spec with the actual speed and such for driving. How different will the handling be with 55 series? with 50 series? Does tire brand make a bigger difference?
Will 225/55-16 give me the sporty yet comfortable ride i am looking for?
What sizes are you all running? How do you like the feel and handling?
Any comments will be great.

with the same tire width (225) the 55s will be taller.
Spend a little time with the tire calculator in the stickies. Sizes other than stock can mess up your speedo.
Tire brand and tread design can make a huge difference in grip, weather handling, noise and comfort.
If I were you, I would stick with the stock size and find a type of tire that fits your needs more. There are lots of reviews on different types of tires here and not everyone has the high performance tires, either.

So you think i should just keep my stock 15's for good? Or do you mean to get more information before i buy 16's?
I am planning on getting the wheels/tires in nov./dec. months. I am saving right now. So i am researching now, before i buy.
I guess the things i need from a tire are: sporty handling better than stock, somewhat comforable ride, keeps speedo same, and looks good.
Maybe the 55 series would do that? They are closest to stock speedo.
Anymore comments.

sorry, I meant the stock size for the 16s.
in other words, get the 16 inch equivalent of the stock size, or the closest thing to it.
I usually go to Les Schwab and get Toyos from them. I know they are a little more expensive, but everything there is a total "no hassle" deal. You might want to go into your local Schwab and just tell them what you are looking for and they will usually steer you in a good direction. Maybe some of the NWMaxima.com guys know which Schwab up there is a good one.
If you don't go to Schwab, try Discount Tire. A friend of mine used to be the manager at a Discount Tire in Portland and on my first Maxima, he recommended some Dunlop A2 Sports and they were a good mix of handling, comfort and lower cost.

Thanks again. But i guess i am still debating whether or not to get 17's or 16's. It's a tough choice for me. I want the looks of 17, but more comfort of 16's. I have a while to decide. Any comments on that or some comfortable 235/45-17 tires. By the way, i'm on H&Rs and GR2's. It still feels stock, except for the big bumps.
Thanks, Davd
