300ZX Performance on the Max
Does anyone know what are the exact mechanical differences bet'n the VG30DE engine on the 300ZX and the VQ30DE on OUR cars? Could parts be interchanged? My friend and I were talkin about how easy it is to just swap parts on old muscle cars, so that's were the questions come from. Any good knowledge would be intersting to know.

I have the VG engine in my 93 Infiniti J30 (nissan decided to use this hopped up engine in the J30). my 98 max seems more torquey in the low end, but the infiniti with the 300zx engine pulls like crazy in the top end. I found out that it actually has a Variable valve timing system very similiar to Honda's Vtec. If i smash the pedal in the j30, the engine takes on a totally different noise and pull after about 4800 Rpm. It kinda surpised me when I first drove the car. I looked in the owners manual and it was describing the variable valve timing feature on that engine. I guess since Honda pioneered the idea in the early 90's, Nissan decided to implement it as well by 1993.

Honda didn't pioneer it, variable valve timing has been around since the late 70's and early 80's, BMW's introduced it I think, it was nothing new when Honda started touting it in their cars. VTEC isn't even that great, other companies have better systems. Nissan's was good, and Ford's ZTEC and Toyota's VVT-i are superior to VTEC, all the ricers just like VTEC because its from Honda.
