Why modify behind the MAF?

If you have the stock Mass Air Flow sensor and ECU, why should you make any modifications in the air flow behind the MAF?

I just ordered a JWT pop charger for my '96 I-30t. Most of the people on this excellent board have written that this mod is enhanced if you add a mid-pipe between the MAF and the throttle body. But, aren't the MAF and ECU programmed to make adjustments based on stock fittings behind the MAF? In other words, the MAF senses the air passing through it. Then the MAF and ECU make adjustments to the engine based on what the MAF is reading, right? If that's so, then the MAF and ECU are supposing that the stock fittings are still in place behind the MAF. If you add a mid-pipe after the MAF sensor, then the engine and ECU cannot know how air flow will be different than the stock fittings for which they were programmed.

So, do I add the $70 Frankencar mid-pipe or not?

One week ago, I would not have been able to write this question. Thanks, again, to everyone who participates on this excellent board.

Mid pipe allows better and/or smoother air flow. If it flows more air, the MAF reads more air. Doesn't matter if it's modifyed before it or after it.

He's right. As the MAF sensor reads more air, it sends the readings to the ECU. The better the air/fuel mixture, the better performance and fuel economy. What you are really after is the oxygen, not so much plain "air" (too bad that nitro is the only fix so far). Driving in the Mid-west (Utah) is nowhere near as fun as driving back East (Ohio).

Mid-pipe gains may be minimal, but it does allow for more air flow. I compare your question to a resistor in an electrical current. It does not matter where on the wire you place the resistor—as soon as the electricity gets there, it is limited. I used to think (back in the days when I was sure I had the answer for everything) that you needed to have a resistor placed in the wire somewhere BEFORE electricity reached the unit it was powering. Not so.

The same concept applies. More air flow, before or after MAF sensor still means more air flow.

Excellent and well-reasoned answers. Thanks for your help. Looks like I'll take a chance on that Frankencar mid-pipe.
