Hey, I recently noticed a clicking noise that my car made (97 Max SE 5spd). I knew it was the tranny because whenever I depressed the clutch pedal, the noise would stop. The clicking is noisier as I rev higher, and it happens with all of the gears. So anyway, I went to my mechanic today, and he looked at the clutch, said I should get a new one (well, I really should've, this one had about 147k miles on it if it wasn't replaced by the previous owner). He replaced that, the throwout bearing (which I thought might be the source of the noise), and resurfaced the flywheel. Well, now the clutch pedal is much easier to press down, and the clutch engages much more smoothly. However, the noise is just the same, and stops when I depress the clutch pedal. So WTF is wrong? Is it something to do with the input or output shaft or something? Help!

Hey guy, its your input shaft bearing. From what I understand, the longer you drive it, the worse it gets. Once the bearing frays, it leaves little metal shavings in your tranny to do damage to other parts. However, if repaired soon enough, you wont need a complete tranny rebuild. I would suggest to go to a reputable transmission repair person. Good luck with it. CCB
