Are 99.5 and 2000 engines the same?
Are 99.5 - 2001 engines the same?
I know that the 1999.5 and the 2001 maxima's use the same y-pipe. Does this mean that they have the same engine? My 1999.5 federal emissions engine has died and I found a used 1997 engine for a decent price, I just wanna make sure it'll work or if I should look for a 1999.5- 2001 engine. Thanks.
Yer ECU will go crazy looking for inputs from your soon-to-be missing O2 sensors, will have a hell of time operating your swish valves (they won't exist either) and I found out that the "undefined" ECU codes we get with the 99.5 are for NATS (Nissan Anti-Theft System, standard in all 99.5 Maximas regardless of trim level)- another component that may go AWOL with yer engine swap... think this one over carefully...

It will work BUT you will have to swap the following from your 99.5 engine to the new 97 engine:
1) Intake manifold (upper and lower parts) as well as all the stuff bolted to the upper intake manifold (IAC idle air valve assembly, canister purge control valve, etc)
2) Front exhaust manifold with integrated pre-catalytic converters
Why? The 99/99.5's use a swirl valves in the lower manifold unit that the 97 engine does not as well as a different style canister purge control valve and different pre-cat configuration (front manifold has integrated pre-cat). You need these items to be compatible with your 99.5 engine computer.
