Please help with a battery / electrical question

My first post here - so please be gentle

I seem to be having an issue with either my battery or perhaps electrical system.

I had a 4 month old DieHard, in my 1995 Maxima, (76K miles).

It was driven till around 1AM this morning, no problems.

When I tried to start it about 9hrs later the locks weren't working and the (aftermarket) alarm would not turn off due to the battery condition.

I had it jumped, and it started up immediately.

I had my son drive it over top the dealer, and he called me in a panic once he arrived telling me that the power died while he was going 70MPH for about 10 seconds while he coasted, then suddenly came back on.

The dealer did a diagnostic and claims the alternator is working properly, and it's definitely just the battery not holding a charge.

Is there any history of any sort of electrical problems with the 95 Max that I'm unaware of?

I appreciate any and all responses - I now have a Honda S2000 and the Maxima is more my sons car but I still love it

Kev,

I had the dealer install a new battery, and Sears is giving me a refund on the DieHard.

Battery not holding a charge doesn't equate to loss of electrical power while cruising. While cruising it's the alternator that supplies the power to electrical system. If that cycle repeats, you definitely have an intermittent alternator failure, and you need to replace it.

A total loss of electrical power could be caused by a faulty connection. Check the condition of your battery cables. Make sure the connections, on both sides, are very clean. Also check the plug and wires comming from your alternator.

If the alternator quit, the car would run on the battery until all the power was drained from it.

If the battery was the problem, the car would run on the alternator once it was jumped.

Your having an intermittent total loss of electrical power which leads me to believe you have a bad cable or connection someplace.
