just remember... you get what you pay for ( most of the time), so if you get something really cheap, and it has all the options, you should check over all the components, so that further down the road, you wont have to do major maintenence. Make sure you can find out the cars history too... I rather have it driven hard, BUT properly maintained, than a grandma driven car with service intervals of grandmas age. I got my 97 SE with no options and 80k miles and a "few" mods for 9k, BUT it was in pristine condition, mechanically as well as cosmetically. So be wary of low prices, and make sure to check stuff over.

Plus according to www.consumerguide.com , the '97's have a few more troublespots, whereas '98's only have minor break noise listed as a troublespot. therefore my pick is the '98

but S103100F is right...all maxes are good(which is one of the reasons why sites like this one exist)...especially when compared to other cars!

i thought 98 and 99 have the same ECU, and 95-97 have different. that's why JWT ECU mod fits only 95-97 models.

black to black 1995 GXE with bose system + sunroof, 65,000 miles, paid $8000 on feburary 2002.

95 GXE are the fastest 4th gen, and it's hard to find a black on black 95 GXE these days...

Dont get a 99, They have Coil Pack Issues, IMHO the best Maxima would be the 97 SE 5SPD. Kinna hard to find one but its very possible

I know that you said you don't want a GXE, but if you are going to put rims on the thing, you might as well get a GXE. They don't look any different once you put wheels on and tint the windows, and more of them are 5spd. They are actually a little bit lighter too, so they have more potential to be faster.

I personally like the 97-99 because of the back mostly. I just like the redesigned trunk lid instead of the concave one. It is just all kind of your preference. If I were you, I would try to wait just a little, and the 04 maximas will probably make the 4th gens prices drop soon. The 04s are just now getting kind of popular and catching on, so give it just a little bit. Everyone will want one of those or 5th gens so then you will be sittin right for 4th gen.

Good luck.
